Experience Details
Step into Akiyamago, a hidden corner of Japan blanketed in deep winter snow. This winter journey takes you to some of Niigata’s most iconic and remote destinations, offering a rare glimpse into life shaped by snow.
Your adventure begins with a visit to the immensely popular Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel, where art and nature meet to create a striking and memorable landscape.
Next, visit Akeyama, the former Okasawa Elementary School, now a cultural and art space. Through its exhibits, you’ll discover the history, traditions, and daily life of Akiyamago. This community has thrived for generations in winter’s harsh conditions.
For lunch, enjoy a heart-warming meal at Katakuri no Yado, made with abundant local ingredients. Tsunan Town has been home to people since the Jomon period, one of Japan’s oldest continuous cultures.
Its mountains provide wild vegetables and mushrooms, while pure spring water and fertile soil nurture fragrant rice and fresh seasonal vegetables. The carefully prepared, handmade dishes reflect the wisdom and lifestyle that have sustained life in this heavy-snow region for generations. Gentle on the body and warming in the cold season, this meal offers comfort and a moment of connection, rooted in Tsunan's nature and culture.
Guests can also explore the Tsumari Sugoroku art installation on site, adding a thoughtful cultural layer to the experience.
As you walk through the village, deep snow and quiet stillness surround you. Life here continues as it has for generations. The peaceful winter landscapes, local traditions, and a warm, nourishing meal create moments to pause and connect.
This tour will let you experience Japan’s hidden winter, feel its calm, and appreciate the quiet strength of the local community.
