Experience Details
Beyond a path lined with towering cedar trees lies Daitozan Art Museum, a remarkable family estate preserved through 32 generations of the Murayama family.
Once home to former sake brewers and village leaders, this historic residence now welcomes guests to experience Japanese culture in a setting filled with treasured antiques, heirlooms, and quiet beauty. The estate was also cherished by the celebrated writer Ango Sakaguchi, adding another layer to its rich history.
Hosted by the Murayama family's 32nd-generation head, this experience offers a rare opportunity to explore a historic estate where generations of tradition are still preserved. More than a workshop, it is a chance to connect with Japanese craftsmanship, hospitality, and history in an authentic setting.
The experience begins with a hands-on wagashi-making session. Depending on the package you choose, you'll either craft three seasonal nerikiri inspired by Japan's changing seasons or create elegant hana ohagi decorated with delicate flowers made from sweet bean paste.
Guided by your instructor, you'll learn traditional techniques used to shape these beautiful Japanese sweets. Guests who choose the nerikiri experience will also receive one handcrafted nerikiri as a special gift.
After making your wagashi, learn how to whisk your own bowl of matcha using traditional techniques. Then, enjoy it with the sweets you created, a classic pairing that has long been enjoyed in Japanese tea culture.
As you explore the museum, admire generations of carefully preserved artwork, antiques, and everyday objects that tell the story of the Murayama family. Outside, the Japanese garden and cedar-lined approach provide peaceful spaces to reflect and capture memorable photographs.
If you have any wagashi left, it will be carefully packed for you to take home and enjoy later.
