Experience Details
Anyone in search of a location that thrives on coffee culture and an energetic art scene simply must include Kiyosumi, Tokyo, on their travel itinerary. However, don’t worry if you aren’t a coffee drinker, as this lively district also has something truly special for tea enthusiasts.
A cup of tea with Kiyosumi as the backdrop to your evening easily brings traditional calm to cap off a busy day in the modern city.
Step into a charming, 90-year-old teahouse in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, where traditional Japanese design meets a relaxed, welcoming vibe. Led by Mr. Takei (also known by his tea master name, Sodo), who breaks free from strict school rules, invites everyone — no formal wear or etiquette required. Begin your evening with a local Kiyosumi gin and tonic or sake paired with tasty snacks. Then, unwind in a softly lit tatami room with an authentic tea experience that’s both accessible and deeply rooted in tradition. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even ask the teacher to give you insights into the history and background of tea ceremonies and how they stood the test of time.
Mr. Takei trained as a live-in disciple under the head of a samurai-style tea school. Since becoming independent in 2013, he has dedicated himself to sharing the spirit of “chanoyu” beyond the bounds of tradition or formality. His tea ceremonies offer an inviting, down-to-earth experience where all are welcome; no prior knowledge, posture practice, or perfect bow required.
That being said, there is the option to sit in meditation and enjoy tea in an authentically traditional manner. Nevertheless, even those who are not familiar with the cultural practices are welcome to participate. Come as you are!
In this unique corner of Tokyo, the centuries-old spirit of tea finds new life — effortless, inclusive, and perfectly steeped in the present.
