Experience Details
Step into Katsuji's home in Osaka and experience Japanese hospitality through tea, cooking, and personal storytelling.
In this hands-on class, you will begin with a traditional tea ceremony in a quiet tea room, then move into the kitchen to learn how to prepare sushi and tempura before enjoying your meal together.
To end the experience, you will receive a handwritten calligraphy piece from your host as a keepsake.
Your host, Katsuji, is a seasoned chef with over 30 years of experience running izakaya, ramen shops, and sushi restaurants.
Together with his daughter Chiharu, he now shares his cooking knowledge through warm, home-based classes in Osaka. His teaching blends technique, tradition, and everyday Japanese home cooking.
You will begin with a Japanese tea ceremony in a quiet tea room inside Katsuji’s home. As matcha is carefully prepared, you can slow down, watch, and connect with Japanese culture through this calm and meaningful ritual.
Next, you will move into the kitchen for a guided cooking session. You will learn how to prepare sushi rice, understand basic rolling techniques, and shape different types of sushi using fresh ingredients.
You will then prepare tempura by coating shrimp, mushrooms, and vegetables in light batter before frying them to a crisp finish.
After cooking, you will sit down to enjoy the dishes you have made. This is a relaxed moment to taste your food and share the experience with your host.
At the end of the class, Katsuji will present you with a handwritten calligraphy artwork created as a personal souvenir.
It is a simple and meaningful reminder of your time in his home and the experience you shared.
