Brightly colored carp swimming along street canals and traditional storehouses are charming sights that have earned Hida Furukawa the nickname “Little Kyoto.” A rural town nested in the mountains and only 15 minutes north of Takayama in Gifu, Hida Furukawa’s quaint streets delight travelers hoping to experience the tranquil lifestyle of rural Japan (a uniquely popular concept known as Satoyama). Beyond the sights, Hida Furukawa is also a treasure trove of fresh produce and mountain vegetables, not to mention the select Hida wagyu beef. No visit is complete without tasting the local specialties — or, even better, making them yourself! In this cooking lesson, you’ll prepare multiple dishes using fresh ingredients from Gifu Prefecture. Learn to cook a traditional meal with seasonal offerings, and enjoy your handmade lunch with your local host. Sample Menu (subject to change depending on availability and seasonality): -Miso soup with seasonal vegetables -Pan-fried chicken and cabbage dish -Potatoes with egoma (perilla seeds) sauce -Rice You’ll enjoy the joys of cooking in SATOYAMA STAY NINO-MACHI, a restored machiya with warm wooden interiors and modern finishes.
