Experience Details
Western cuisine is just as part of daily Japanese life as washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine). Look no further than Japan's take on hamburger steak for a go-to comfort fusion meal with a Japanese twist. Originally a German dish, hamburger steak first appeared in Japan in the late 19th century and boomed in popularity in the 1960s to become a core Western-Japanese fusion dish. Though hamburger steak can easily be found in many restaurants in Japan and overseas, it's a great dish to learn to make at home – and this class will teach you exactly how!
In this experience, hosts Arisa and Maya will teach you how to make a stewed beef hamburger steak with delicious Japanese-inspired side dishes. Born in Canada and raised in Osaka, Japan, the two sisters inherited a passion for cooking from their grandmother, who ran a shabu-shabu (Japanese hot pot) restaurant, and they love nothing more than to bring guests a fun, memorable Japanese food experience inspired by her example.
After meeting them at the pre-arranged meeting point, you'll head to the cooking venue and go through the ingredients and recipes before getting hands-on experience cooking your stewed hamburger steak, searing it first before simmering it in a savory sauce. You'll also make miso soup using homemade dashi (soup stock) and potato salad as side dishes, with Arisa and Maya walking you through every step. No meal is complete without dessert, so you'll also make some wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) and end the class on a sweet note.
