Restaurant Details
Not all teppanyaki restaurants are created equal. Some are set apart by their convenient location, others by their exquisite ambiance, and yet others by the quality and rarity of the wagyu cuts they offer.
Teppanyaki Gump is one of those rare restaurants that satisfies all three. Located directly outside Osakatemmangu Station (and one stop from Umeda Station), one of the busiest stations on the JR Tozai Line thanks to its proximity to the Osaka Tenmangu Shrine and Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street, Teppanyaki Gump is one of the most visited teppanyaki restaurants in the Tenmangu area — in good company with other Tenmangu mainstay restaurants like Sushi Toyonaga and Sushitsune.
But Teppanyaki Gump also distinguishes itself by its use of Naniwa Kuroushi wagyu beef. Osaka’s premier wagyu beef, Naniwa Kuroushi is a type of kuroge wagyu beef — beef from the Japanese Black cow, the same kind that gave rise to the famed Kobe beef — that is produced in extremely small quantities, with just six to seven heads of cattle being sold every month. Raised at a single ranch in Hannan City, an hour south of Osaka, the cattle are fed a special diet that incorporates soybean husks, bran and crushed grapes, giving the meat its distinctive flavor.
Springboarded to fame by being served at the G20 Osaka Summit in 2019, it has since become one of the most highly regarded beefs in the country. It’s this beef that’s expertly prepared by the chefs at Teppanyaki Gump, in an intimate and modern space that never feels cramped or overwhelming.
The owner-chef was trained at a French restaurant, and incorporates his extensive experience in the culinary scene there into his teppanyaki grilling — a masterful fusion of two of the world’s leading culinary philosophies. Naturally for French cuisine, a wide selection of wines are available to go with the meal, picked personally by both the owner-chef and the head chef.
