We had a wonderful stay at the Farmer's Inn. Located in a beautiful, quiet village, the homestead offers all the modern comforts within a traditional house.
Our host was very attentive and kind, she explained each preparatory step of the lavish dinner that she was preparing. We ate a lot and it was DELICIOUS! And so was the breakfast :)
We'd definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys great homecooked food, traditional Japanese housing, and beautiful nature.

Our experience with Sawa-furusato Inn was one of the most amazing experience we had in Japan. The activity gave us the opportunity to see how ‘real Japanese’ people lived, specially in the rural area. Despite the language barrier, but thanks to google translate, we were able to share life experiences and understand better the way of life of Japanese people, specially in farming communities.
Of course, there is no question and equal to the excellent meal we had with the Matsusaka beef (that was cooked by our host, Sawa, Sukiyaki two-ways - grilled beef, with soup and vegetables, plus the own-rice harvested by the Sensei - father of the house, who also entertained us with his very amiable impressions and sharing of his own farming experience. He took pride in his work as a rice farmer as the Matsusaka beef produced in the area (it was recently awarded in 2025 as the best Matsusaka beef in all of Japan)!!.
Truly, doing this farm experience (sleeping in traditional Japanese farm house, using traditional cooking methods for rice, chopping for fire wood) was something very different and humbling. Despite our train adventure (or mis-adventure) travelling to Mie, it was worth the trip.
But what really hit us is the personal and heartfelt sharing we had with our host Sawa and her father, that we would not have had in a large city. We would be happy to go back again !! Arigatou gozaimasu! ありがとうございます

I had a wonderful experience. Sawa-san (the host) came and picked me up from the station and drove me through the lovely Mie countryside to the guesthouse. We even stopped along the way to gather FRESH spring water from pipes (constantly inspected for freshness/cleanliness), literally, from the side of a mountain.
The guesthouse is fantastic and spacious with all the modern facilities and amenities one would expect. Sawa-san even made these little dried garlic-bread snacks to have with tea. She is wonderful.
I especially enjoyed out time cooking. The sukiyaki was an incredible experience for a first-timer. All of the vegetables (that we gathered from her own enclosed garden) and Matsusaka beef were delicious and she did a tremendous job preparing it for me. Cooking rice using a traditional wood-fire stove felt very authentic. The same thing with breakfast; Sawa-san prepared a feast on both occasions. She is a wonderful host who enjoys showing her culture and lifestyle to guests, and I cannot recommend this experience enough.
Book it. You will not be disappointed.

1.Good communication in coordinating p/up from the train to the farmer's inn.
2. Immediately, felt welcomed to the home/farm of Mokumokuya by the owners.
3. Had great experiences by helping pick potatoes, collect chicken eggs, spring water & fish for our dinner. Especially, since we are city folks.
4. Delicious dinner, *conversations and hospitality from the time we arrived to our departure the next day.
5. We look forward to visiting and staying at this farm again on our next visit to Japan.
*Both hosts & us used our language translator apps to communicate to each other. It was very effective as little got lost in translations.

Loved this experience. Hosts were very friendly and caring. Unfortunately due to the timing, I could only do tea picking, but to make up for it, they took me to a park, to the mountains etc. They were proactively offering to take pictures and helping me plan my return itinerary. I wish I could stay longer to also go around by myself in the beautiful nature. The meals (dinner & breakfast) were too big for one person and they were still trying to offer me different things. The room was also extremely spacious, authentic Japanese house, everything you need, not more, not least, with wabisabi spirit;)
Big thank you and a strong recommendation for nature lovers who want to experience the Japanese hospitality.

An amazing experience provided by the most gentle and kind couple we have encountered in our travels. They made us feel part of the family from the very beginning and the food was out of this world. We cannot thanked them enough for their hospitality and warmth.
A remarkable experience.

This was probably the best overnight experience you could possibly have. I love these folks who were our hosts and would 100% go out of my way when I come back to Japan to visit with them again. Not only was their home in the middle of what I'm sure was the inspiration for Totoro, but their cooking skills, humor, and generosity were second to none. Their passion for their way of life and excitement to share it with others is so fun to be around. You are honestly messing up if you do not book this right now. It is so far away from everything but that is absolutely one of the best parts. I'm pretty sure my husband is plotting to retire out there, language barrier be damned. Do it, you won't be sorry.

We had an amazing time! We brought 12 Americans that spoke zero Japanese and were hoping for a truly cultural experience and this delivered! Out of everything we did in almost 3 weeks across Japan, this was everyone’s favorite. The family was so welcoming and friendly. And the food was incredible, some of the best we had in Japan. But just having the experience to break bread, tell stories and jokes with people from difficult cultures is really incredible and not something people take the time to do. It’s truly a beautiful experience. And the story behind why they began hosting is very touching. I am really doing a poor job of articulating how wonderful the experience was. Just know if you’re on the fence, do it, and you won’t be disappointed. To the family, thank you again and you’re always welcome to join us in Wisconsin!

The hosts were great! There are several buildings to stay in. We were the only group for our one night stay, but in theory I believe separate parties would each use a different building. We made takoyaki, and the hosts made tempura and katsu along with the star Matsusaka beef (bbq’ed and in sukiyaki), plus small side dishes. Way more food than we could possibly consume. Breakfast included homemade rice flour bread, and they sent us off with bentos as well. In fact, because our next stop was a 45 minute drive away (Ise), they drove us to our hotel to drop off our luggage and then dropped us off at Ise Jingu to save us the train ride. I wouldn’t get too excited over the vegetable garden; I don’t think we even ate the vegetables we picked, and if you’ve ever kept a small garden yourself it’s essentially the same experience.
