Experience Details
From soup stock to sushi, seafood is an integral part of Japanese cuisine. But a lot goes into bringing all that seafood from the fishing harbor to your plate — and this is the perfect experience to learn about that process, and even learn to make sushi!
Located on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, Yoichi is a small town with a long history of herring fishing. While herring are no longer caught, Yoichi still boasts a wide variety of abundant seafood, such as sweet shrimp, and a thriving industry.
After meeting your guide at Yoichi Station and a brief orientation, hop on a bus to the fishing port, accompanied by an interpreter. Your guide will be a former fisheries extension specialist with in-depth knowledge of Hokkaido’s fishing industry. As you walk through the bustling port, your guide will educate you on the history and operations that keep Yoichi’s fishing industry going. You’ll even get to visit Minami Shotaro Shoten, a local shop that has been smoking fish for generations.
As if learning about seafood isn’t enough, you’ll then take a bus to a local sushi restaurant, where the owner will teach you to make nigiri sushi using fresh seafood straight from Yoichi’s harbor. Even better, you’ll then get to enjoy your own creations for lunch!
