I’ve enjoyed very much the experience of learning how to make traditional Japanese sweets in a real house kitchen. Thanks Yuki for picking me up even under a considerable snow fall.

Our guide, Nori, was great. He speaks very good English and is very helpful. He arranged our lunch and all tickets to public transport. Luckily, we had good weather as well so exploring the city couldn’t have been better. We got some good ideas too on where to go in the next couple of days. Thank you, Nori!

Shun was very eager to share his love and passion for Japanese alcohol. I was particularly happy to learn local way of drinking Sake with Dashi. This is the type of experience I am looking for and he did a great job bringing us to 3 hidden places.

Shun has incredible taste in food and has a deep knowledge about sake. I was the only person in this tour and he was able to tailor the tour to my requests. I asked to try some sake and eat what the locals eat. I'm deeply humbled by his knowledge and exposed how much I didn't know about Japnese cuisine and sake. First stop was a hidden izakaya where the proprietress served a style of food called obanzai, essentially drinking food if you come from a culture that has that concept (I'm Vietnamese, it's very familiar to me). We had a couple of shots of sake and enjoyed a conversation over the snack and sent me recommendations. We continued to a sale tasting where I discovered that had been ignoring an entire classification of sake due to my own ignorance as Shun explained each sake in the flight of sake served to me. We ended off the night with miso ramen from a local favorite ramen shop. My mind was blown and stomach was happy. My only suggestion for Shun is to carry a sign that says "Shun" or "By Food Tour". We arranged a meeting point, but didn't mention how to recognize him. Other than that, I wholly recommend Shun as a tour guide. I'll gladly book him again if I have some folks with me, they need to experience what I experienced!

Total 5 members of my family including 2 children joined this food class and got wonderful and unforgettable experience there. We got warm welcoming from the host and the atmosphere of the house was quiet, peaceful and cozy. The host's explanation was easy and well understandable, and all food we made were fun and delicious!! We will join the next food class here when we visit Sapporo again. I highly recommend others to visit and experience this unique, fun and wonderful food making class..

My friend and I had the most amazing experience in Otaru with Yuko-San who took us on a fantastic tour. We visited Otarus local fish market, the shopping street with beautiful architecture and unique glassware, the picturesque canal lined with warehouses from the old days, had a huge seafood sashimi donburi lunch with Yuko then finished the tour with a sake tasting at the UNESCO Otaru distillery. We learned about Otarus long history through Yuko-San who was the most passionate, considerate and knowledgeable tour guide. She also made for great company and is an all round lovely person, we are incredibly grateful to have met her! If you are planning a trip to Otaru and want to check out all the main sites, culture and cuisine, do this byFood tour and definitely request for Yuko-San! We cannot recommend it enough.

Would highly recommend Shun, he took myself and my two friends to local izakaya and sake bars that we would have missed on our own. Very friendly, saved some recommendations for the future, and everything was tasty! Thanks again for the experience!

We had an incredibly fun time learning to make decorative sushi and onigiri with Yuki! Yuki was an amazing host and teacher and was very patient with us. She also picked us up and dropped us off from the train station which was very helpful! As well as the lesson, she also gave us lots of local recommendations for food around Sapporo and we had lots of laughs and good times. We will take the skills and experience back to Australia and be able to make beautiful decorative sushi and rice balls when we are home. We will definitely do another lesson with Yuki next time we are back in Hokkaido. Thanks Yuki! 😊 Highly recommend!! Everyone needs to do this!

I had a great experience with Shun. It was on a Monday so I was the only patron, but Shun was in great spirit and catered the experience solely for me. We went around to 3 local spots, which I would've never in a million years be able to locate myself. Honestly, felt like just kicking it with friends as we drank highballs, beers, and sake throughout the night. I highly recommend Shun. His sake knowledge and vibe is unbeatable!

Discover the Diverse Culinary Scene of Hokkaido

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, offers a culinary experience that’s as diverse as it is delicious. Known for its fresh seafood, dairy products, and agricultural produce, Hokkaido is a haven for food enthusiasts. The island's rich volcanic soil and favorable climate conditions make it a breeding ground for some of the finest flavors in the Japanese culinary map. Whether you're savoring the fresh catch of the day or indulging in a sweet treat, Hokkaido food experiences promise a delightful journey for your taste buds.

Indulge in Hokkaido’s Seafood Delights

One cannot talk about Hokkaido food experiences without mentioning seafood. Blessed with abundant coastal waters, the island is famous for its fresh and flavorful seafood. Sushi and sashimi lovers will find themselves in paradise as they sample a variety of local catches, including but not limited to uni (sea urchin), ikura (salmon roe), and crab. Not to be missed is the Sapporo crab market, where you can feast on freshly prepared king crabs in myriad forms. For a more immersive experience, try a seafood barbecue where you can grill scallops and other delicacies by the sea.

Experience Farm-Fresh Produce and Dairy

A large part of Hokkaido's charm lies in its lush landscapes, which are ideal for farming. This means that the island not only offers an abundance of fresh seafood but also farm-fresh fruit and vegetables. You can visit local farms and experience the joy of picking seasonal fruits yourself, ranging from strawberries in spring to apples in fall. Dairy products are another highlight; the milk, cheese, and yogurt here are unparalleled, thanks to Hokkaido's rich pastures. Be sure to try a soft-serve ice cream made from locally-sourced milk, a creamy treat that will comfort you in every season.

Delving deeper into the food scene, you'll also find delicious ramen unique to this region. Hokkaido ramen often features a miso-based broth, reflecting the island's agricultural strengths. Each bowl is packed with locally-produced ingredients, creating flavors that are hearty and warming, especially during the colder months.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with Hokkaido Desserts

Hokkaido's sweets are a testament to the quality of its ingredients. You'll find baked goods and desserts that incorporate local milk and cheese, resulting in treats that are creamy, rich, and satisfyingly sweet. Cheesecakes, cookies, and butter sandwiches are just a few examples of what’s on offer. Famous for its confectioneries, Hokkaido offers plenty of opportunities to sample seasonal treats. Don’t forget to bring back some of these sweets as souvenirs to share the delight with friends and family back home.

Whether you're a seafood aficionado, a pastry lover, or someone who enjoys a hearty meal, Hokkaido offers a culinary adventure that's bound to impress. Explore the unique tastes, participate in hands-on food experiences, and immerse yourself in the culture as you eat your way through Hokkaido. Each bite is a taste of the island's rich heritage and dedication to quality. So why wait? Embark on a gastronomic journey and explore the variety of food experiences Hokkaido has to offer.
