Satisfy your cravings while still exploring local food culture in this Japanese home cooking class in Tokyo, where you’ll learn to cook and enjoy the local household staple of gyudon. This beloved rice bowl is topped with thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in sauce and dashi-based broth. The flavors are sweet, savory and umami, creating a wholesome meal that tastes like home.
At the start of the class, you’ll meet your host, Yuki, a local home cook who loves sharing her culture with guests in Japan. After working in the culinary industry and digital media, she runs a cooking school from her grandmother’s renovated kitchen in Bunkyo City, Tokyo. Passionate about sharing Japan’s unique culture with the world, she will teach you how to make gyudon and the story behind the specific techniques and flavors that go into the dish. She will also explain the cultural significance and background and is happy to answer any questions you might have about life in Japan.
As well as making gyudon, you’ll also learn how to make miso soup using a fermented soybean paste and dashi, a traditional soup stock made with kelp seaweed and dried bonito flakes. The result? A delicious meal that you’ll feel proud to have created. Don’t forget to take photos of your homemade meal before eating! Yuki-san will also give you copies of the recipe in English so you can recreate it back at home.
