Experience Details

Step into the kitchen of a tempura restaurant in Kyoto's historic Gion district and learn how a professional chef prepares one of Japan's most beloved dishes.


Rather than simply watching a demonstration, you'll cook at your own dedicated station equipped with a stove, tempura pot, and carefully prepared ingredients, allowing you to learn comfortably at your own pace.


After a warm welcome, the chef, with support from an interpreter, introduces the basics of tempura before guiding you through each step.


Prepare a light batter, coat each ingredient with flour, and fry them one by one as the chef shows you how timing, temperature, and technique create light, crisp tempura. These are skills best learned by doing.


Cook with seasonal ingredients from Kyoto markets, including local vegetables such as Manganji chili peppers. Vegetarian and vegan ingredient substitutions are available upon request.


As each piece finishes frying, place it on the silver mesh to preserve its delicate texture, then arrange everything over rice to create your own tendon bowl. Plating is an important part of Japanese cuisine, and the final presentation is your chance to add a personal touch.


End the experience by enjoying the tempura you've prepared. Freshly fried and carefully plated, it's a rewarding way to experience one of Japan's most beloved dishes.
