This sushi making workshop in Kyoto is held in a traditional Japanese townhouse known as a “machiya,” which is over 110 years old! Hidden down the backstreets only a 10-minute walk from Kyoto Station, step into this beautiful machiya and be greeted by friendly staff. Learn how to make sushi from a sushi master with the help of a friendly translator during this authentic experience.
Step inside and be warmly welcomed to this sushi making workshop by your friendly hosts. You will be invited into the machiya to take a tour and learn about its history. Immediately you will be in awe of the wonderful setting, filled with traditional Japanese decor and antique artwork. With a history spanning back through to the 19th century, the cozy atmosphere will make you feel right at home as you learn all about sushi during this hands-on sushi workshop. This class is a great opportunity to learn more about Kyoto and the Kansai region.
After touring the machiya, your sushi master will explain (in Japanese) about the ingredients and different sushi preparation steps in detail. With the help of a translator, your instructor will teach you about the history of sushi and demonstrate how to make a variety of sushi types. You will learn how to shape 6 nigiri sushi pieces, 3 temari sushi pieces, one gunkan sushi, and one inari sushi. Next, using a variety of seafood and toppings, you will then get a chance to prepare your own. Using pre-cut toppings, you can follow the careful preparation techniques to make your own sushi feast.
After making your sushi, you can leisurely enjoy the atmosphere of the machiya while you eat your sushi. Your sushi feast will be accompanied by some warm miso soup and traditional green tea.
