Hiro gave us a fabulous food experience in downtown Kyoto and informative walking tour through the Gion district. The restaurants he selected for us were perfect, and met our challenging food restrictions :) He was also a great photographer and knew the perfect locations to take the perfect photo! Thank You, Hiro! You made our time in Kyoto unforgettable! Sincerely, Brian & Kristin

We enjoyed our Kyoto food tour with Hiro. In addition to delicious food, Hiro’s local knowledge of Kyoto area, culture, and traditions made our encounter very enriching. But the most memorable experiences were the conversations over dinner. Looking forward to future visits and tours of Kyoto.

A definite highlight of our trip to Japan. From the moment we walked in, Midori-san showed us great hospitality by serving us tea and sweets. She is very friendly and lively, and we felt right at home. She asked about our itinerary and gave us detailed recommendations. This was close to the end of our Japan trip, but I'd strongly recommend booking this near the start so you can benefit most from her suggestions! The cooking class was great and Midori-san was very patient and clear in her instructions. We made vegan onigiri, gyoza and ramen. The onigiri was surprisingly simple to make and we also received printouts of the recipe. After only being back in the US for a few days, I have already made onigiri for lunch. The gyoza and ramen were equally delicious. Make sure to come with an empty stomach! After we finished the food, she even walked us to a nearby supermarket so we could pick up the ingredients to make them at home. Overall, Midori-san went above and beyond to make this a great experience for us. There are of course many things to do in Kyoto, but as a tourist it's rare to be able to have an experience like this where you are welcomed inside a local's home. I strongly recommend this class.

One of the highlights of our trip. Midori is very well informed and likes to share knowledge about the food and culture. She gives shopping tips not only for food items but also for other hobby-related stuff like knitting or sawing. She even took us to a local supermarket to show what products are available and where to get them. Because Midori prepared the easy stuff in advance the cooking class was able to cover 3 whole recipes with a lot of background info. We should have done the class in the beginning of our trip because of all the good tips. We wish Midori all the best!

Hiroshi is a fantastic tour guide. He had a great sense of humour. We had a wonderful meal and he was very open to ordering a dish that we wanted to try out. He took several group pictures at popular tourist sites. It was a treat to have so many pictures of our tour. It was nice to have someone who is local who had detailed knowledge of Kyoto. He was very informative and we learned a lot about the Japanese culture. I would recommend Hiroshi to everyone.

5+ STARS!!!!! - This was an authentic local experience that went far beyond just the food. From the very first second, our fantastic guide, Hiro, made us feel like old friends with his welcoming and confident nature. Beyond the incredible flavors we tasted, we were treated to a wealth of historical and cultural insights that made the evening truly meaningful. If you want to elevate an already great adventure, I highly recommend booking a private tour; it provides a deeper sense of presence and a more intimate connection to the experience. What a great memory. Look for Hiro if you can—you’ll start the tour with a guide and leave with a friend! Muchas gracias, Hiro!- Hasta pronto :))

Hiro went above and beyond to turn our Kyoto food tour into a one of a kind evening filled with great conversation, beautiful sites, incredible history, and unique dishes that we wouldn’t have found on our own. He took many pictures for us and even sent us several recommendations for our upcoming visits to Osaka and Okinawa. We highly recommend an evening with Hiro on your next visit to Kyoto!

Hiro made a good introduction on what we understood are some of the common foods people eat in izakayas. We tried multiple dishes, ranging from gyozas, soups, omlette with soup and rice, yakitori (charcoal grilled chicken skewers - very delicious), lightly pickled cucumbers and other dishes i can't recall their name :). Most of them were to our liking. We also had some cool drinks (e.g. a yuzu based cocktail which was light and great) as we turned down beer as we are not fans of it. After the tour, Hiro also guided us through the Gion district, Yasaka shrine + pagoda, explaining us some very interesting historical characteristics of the area, japanese culture and recommended other areas to visit. We really appreciated the effort and the fact that he extended the tour to do this kind of thing. It complemented the whole experience and took things to the next level. So if it's your first time in Kyoto and you want to learn what to eat, where to eat and where to go, Hiro's your guy! Very satisfied with his tour!

Midori and the class were amazing! We had such a great time learning how to cook traditional Japanese foods and about the Japanese culture. Midori was not just helpful with cooking skills; also so helpful recommending places to visit and experience during our time in Japan. We had a fun time and the food we made was delicious! Highly recommend Midori’s Kyoto Kitchen cooking class. Thank you, Midori! Arigato gozaimasu!

Discover Kyoto's Best Gyoza Food Experiences

Kyoto, a city known for its rich history and cultural heritage, is also home to some of the most delightful culinary experiences one can have in Japan. Among these gastronomic delights, the gyoza stands out as a favorite. These mouth-watering dumplings, with their perfectly crispy exterior and savory filling, offer a taste of Japan that is both delicious and comforting. If you find yourself in Kyoto, exploring the city's vibrant food scene, trying gyoza is an absolute must.

Why Kyoto is a Gyoza Lovers' Paradise

Kyoto offers a unique twist on the classic gyoza, adapting the popular dish with local ingredients and cooking styles. The city's commitment to quality and craftsmanship is evident in every bite. In Kyoto, you can find variations of gyoza filled with seasonal produce, such as yuba, a popular soybean product made from the skin of boiled soy milk, or shiso, an aromatic herb that adds a refreshing taste. These local ingredients enhance the traditional pork or vegetable filling, providing a unique Kyoto touch that food lovers from around the world can appreciate.

The experience of enjoying gyoza in Kyoto is not just about the food itself but also about the atmosphere. Many places serving gyoza are located in charming, traditional settings that allow you to immerse yourself in the ambiance of the city. Imagine sitting in a cozy izakaya (Japanese pub) or a rustic machiya (traditional wooden townhouse), savoring hot and freshly made gyoza while enjoying the serene view of a Japanese garden or the lively buzz of a narrow alley filled with locals and tourists alike.

Popular Gyoza Experiences in Kyoto

A visit to Kyoto is not complete without taking part in a gyoza-making class. These workshops allow you to learn the art of making gyoza from skilled Japanese chefs, guiding you through every step, from preparing the dough and filling, to the intricate folding technique that gives these dumplings their signature crescent shape. This hands-on experience offers you the chance to appreciate the meticulous process and to create your own masterpiece, which you can later enjoy freshly cooked.

For those who prefer to savor rather than prepare, Kyoto hosts several food tours that include stops at renowned gyoza eateries. These tours often offer the chance to taste different types of gyoza, comparing traditional recipes with inventive new versions. You might sample gyoza accompanied by unique dipping sauces made with ponzu or sesame, providing a range of flavors that enhance the dish's deliciousness.

For an authentic taste of Kyoto's culinary culture, a gyoza dining experience offers you not just a meal, but a deeper connection to the city. The simplicity of this dish belies the complexity and expertise involved in its preparation, making it a beloved staple that continues to impress both locals and international visitors alike.
