From the moment we stepped into the private tea tasting, it felt like entering a completely different world—one defined by calm, care, and an almost reverent appreciation for tea. What truly elevated the entire experience, however, was our teacher. Their depth of knowledge was nothing short of astonishing. Every detail—from the origin of the leaves to the subtle differences in processing methods—was explained with such clarity and passion that it transformed each sip into a story. You could tell this wasn’t just expertise; it was a genuine love for the craft. The tea itself was absolutely exquisite. Each variety we sampled was more nuanced and flavorful than the last, with layers of aroma and taste I had never noticed before. The experience was paired with a thoughtfully prepared selection of food that complemented the teas beautifully. Every bite felt intentional, enhancing the tasting experience and making the whole session feel indulgent without being overwhelming. What surprised me most was just how fun it all was. This wasn’t a stiff or overly formal class—it was engaging, interactive, and filled with moments of delight and discovery. We laughed, asked questions, compared favorites, and left feeling not only more knowledgeable but genuinely inspired. All in all, this private tea tasting was an unforgettable experience and such a unique, enjoyable way to explore the world of tea. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone—even those who think they already know tea.

The hostesses performing the tea ceremony were excellent - very engaged and good instructors when we had the make the tea ourselves. The calligraphy option was a bonus. However, it did feel very crowded in the house and it seemed that those who chose to rent a kimono and sat apart from those who didn’t, had a different experience. It might be good to have the people who rent kimonos for the tea ceremony to have their own ceremony.

The whole experience and hospitality was simply amazing. We got great kimonos, wonderful eats in the beginning, a slide show explaining the rituals of tea - followed by tea making . Each of us then got to choose from various activities like calligraphy, matcha making and miniature zen garden model making

It was a wonderful and fulfilling experience! The house in which the tea ceremony took place was quaint and lovely as were the ladies who guided us through each step of the beautiful process. From the tea to flower arrangement to calligraphy, each step was taken with such respect and care. The experience was one of the most wholesome experiences I have had in my travels. My friend and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys learning about history, culture and matcha!

Discover the Tradition of Japanese Tea in Kyoto

Kyoto, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, is also a hub for authentic Japanese tea experiences. When you immerse yourself in Kyoto's tea culture, you're not just sampling a drink but delving into centuries of history and tradition. Japanese tea, especially matcha, is ingrained in Kyoto's cultural fabric, with numerous tea rooms and gardens that invite you to unwind and savor its distinct flavors.

In Kyoto, you can discover the subtle art of tea preparation. These experiences are not just about drinking tea; they are about understanding the rituals and customs that make each cup special. You might find yourself stepping into a tranquil tea house, often adorned with traditional tatami mats and wooden elements, where a skilled tea master guides you through the delicate process of preparing matcha. The experience often includes learning how to whisk the powdered tea to create a frothy top and how to enjoy it with small sweet confections that balance its natural bitterness.

Furthermore, many experiences extend beyond mere tasting and offer insights into the tea’s cultural significance. You’ll learn about the Japanese tea ceremony, known as "chanoyu," which is a reflection of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. This ceremony has been perfected over centuries and is an art form in itself, making for a truly unforgettable cultural immersion.

Savor Authentic Kyoto Tea Experiences

One of the most rewarding aspects of sampling Japanese tea in Kyoto is the range of settings where you can enjoy this revered beverage. You might find yourself in a serene garden setting, where the natural beauty adds to the calming influence of the tea, or perhaps you will find a tea cafe that offers a modern twist on traditional flavors.

Beyond the traditional matcha, Kyoto offers a variety of teas including sencha, gyokuro, and hojicha. Each of these teas has its own unique characteristics and preparation methods, offering a diverse range of tastes for every palate. The artisans you meet on these experiences are often passionate about sharing their knowledge, and you'll likely gain new insights into how different brewing techniques can alter the flavor profile of tea dramatically.

In addition to tea, these experiences often incorporate traditional Japanese sweets called "wagashi," finely crafted to complement tea's rich flavors. These sweets, often artfully made from bean paste and natural ingredients, enhance the tea-tasting experience, making it not just a feast for the palate but for the eyes as well, with their delicate designs inspired by the changing seasons.
