Restaurant Details

Nestled in the serene town of Otsu, Shiga, Otani Chaya is a culinary gem specializing in exquisite unagi (eel) dishes. This charming restaurant is housed in a traditional wooden farmhouse, offering a peaceful dining experience that transports guests to a bygone era. The interior, with its view of a tranquil courtyard, enhances the serene atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing meal.

Otani Chaya is renowned for its expertly grilled Kansai-style eel, which boasts a crispy exterior and tender interior. The menu features a variety of eel dishes, including unaju, hitsumabushi, and shirayaki, where the eel is grilled without sauce to let its natural flavors shine. Accompanying these dishes is a mildly flavored sauce and sansho, a Japanese pepper that adds a unique kick.

The restaurant's culinary secrets have been passed down through three generations, ensuring a dining experience steeped in tradition. Ingredients are sourced fresh daily from Mikawa Isshiki, guaranteeing the highest quality in every dish.

While reservations are typically required due to the restaurant's popularity, Otani Chaya does not accept them in July and August. Guests can expect attentive service from the moment they arrive, with staff guiding them from parking to their seats, ensuring a seamless dining experience.

Located just 250 meters west of the Aisaka Seki ruins on National Route 1, Otani Chaya is easily accessible for those exploring the historical sites of Otsu. Whether you're a local or a traveler, this restaurant promises a memorable journey into the world of unagi cuisine.
