Restaurant Details
The blissful dining at Tagoto Honten invites guests to experience the changing seasons found in Kyoto through the lens of an elegant kaiseki course.
First established in 1871 in Shinkyogoku before relocating to Shijo Otabicho after the war, Tagoto Honten has spent more than a century faithfully preserving the essence of Kyoto cuisine — often considered the foundation of traditional Japanese cooking. Kyoto’s spirit lingers in every corner; pass through the pristine white noren curtain and follow the stone-paved laneway leading to a tranquil space building. A serene garden, a small koi pond and a spread-out floor plan blending of tatami and table seating locks diners away from downtown Shijo Kawaramachi and sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.
The locally inspired menu follows the philosophy of kaiseki dining: complexity in simplicity, depth in subtle flavors, and a seamless reflection of the changing seasons through a multi-course progression that unfolds like a poetic narrative. A deep respect for the local terroir is expressed through the abundant use of heirloom vegetables, perfectly complemented by freshly caught seafood, each dish delicately seasoned to highlight its natural qualities. Kyoto specialties such as yuba, or tofu skin, appear in forms like “raw” sashimi or crisp-fried preparations, while Kyoto-style gluten, known as fu, makes its appearance after the hassun — a curated platter of small bites that sets the theme of the meal.
Seasonality is woven into every detail, from the Arita and Shigaraki ware tableware to the hanging scrolls, fresh floral arrangements, and the ever-changing beauty of the courtyard. With its deep-rooted history and unwavering reverence for Kyoto’s traditions, Tagoto Honten envelops guests in the true spirit of Kyoto hospitality.
