Fugu
Located in Hyogo’s Awaji Island, this local restaurant is giving surf and turf a regional makeover with a menu featuring premium Awaji beef and seafood from the Seto Inland Sea.
Restaurant Details
Yakiniku Seafood Yoshi is located in the tranquil town of Sumoto, on the east coast of Awaji Island. This charming, locally beloved restaurant offers a regional take on surf and turf, bringing a menu that showcases the best of Awaji’s flavors to the delights of its out-of-town travelers.
At the heart of Yoshi's offerings is Awaji beef, a prized local breed that surpasses even the renowned Tajima in cattle production. With lineage tracing back to the prestigious Matsusaka beef, Awaji beef has become a treasured favorite of the residents of Awaji. Diners can enjoy the various cuts of this beef, from the leaner steak to more tender parts.
The seafood is no less local. The tiger pufferfish—one of the more dangerous yet highly prized varieties of the perilous fugu—stands out in Yoshi. The fish is raised for three years in the mineral-rich waters of the Naruto Strait, at the southern tip of Awaji Island. It is famed for its firm flesh, high meat quality, chewiness and rich flavor. Finally, the Spanish mackerel, a long-beloved local dish of Awaji, is consumed raw and has a refreshing and sweet taste. The fresher the fish, the softer the flesh, and the more it melts in the mouth. Although it’s just as sweet when consumed raw as sashimi, patrons love the seared mackerel rice bowl, which sits on top of rice and gets piled with homemade onions.
Different seating options greet guests, with counter-style seats, tatami-style seats, table-style seats and booth-style seats available for relaxing while feasting on fresh Awaji ingredients. The restaurant’s comfortable ambiance welcomes people for all occasions: local families enjoying a nice meal together or friends stopping by before continuing their journey at Seto Inland Sea’s biggest island.
