The flagship store of Yakiniku Ueno Taishoen delivers a classic, no-fuss yakiniku, sticking to tradition without overcomplicating things. The result? Simply delicious.

Restaurant Details

“Japanese barbecue since 1963,” reads the sign.

A long-established yakiniku institution based in Ueno, Tokyo’s museum-filled neighborhood, Yakiniku Ueno Taishoen is the kind of old-school brand that remains rooted in its origins, acknowledging that Japanese-style barbecue, or yakiniku, has deep connections to Korea.

With three locations — including a station-side branch, an annex, and a couple of sister stores — the flagship is where the message is most evident. The restaurant has preserved traditional yakiniku flavors across generations, evolving through various revivals. Today, the space exudes sophistication, with art and a stylish ambiance that sets it apart from the cramped, dimly lit yakiniku spots.

The meat lineup celebrates yakiniku's classic flavors. While appetizers like Korean-inspired kimchi, namul and lettuce wraps are unlimited, make sure to save room for the restaurant’s best cuts of meat. Start with salt-marinated wagyu “gyutan” (beef tongue), then follow up with premium short ribs, loin and lean meat. Classic upscale yakiniku offerings include a perfectly rapid-fried wagyu cutlet sandwich.

It’s all part of the restaurant’s philosophy: keep things simple, don’t try to do too much, and excel at what you do. With frequent media features, it has become a go-to spot for locals and, more recently, international visitors.
