Experience Details

Northern Okayama, once known as Mimasaka Province, carries over 1,300 years of history shaped by its land and water.

Fed by the pure streams of the Hiruzen Highlands, this region developed a deep fermentation culture that still thrives today.

Centuries-old breweries continue to produce sake, miso, and soy sauce using traditional methods. At the same time, modern facilities introduce new approaches that push these crafts forward. It is a place where heritage and innovation naturally coexist.

On this five-hour cycling tour, you will explore Maniwa City at a relaxed pace, moving through countryside scenery, rivers, and historic streets with a friendly English-speaking guide.

Your journey begins at JR Chugoku-Katsuyama Station, where you will meet your host and prepare for your e-bike ride. You will cycle through the Katsuyama Townscape Preservation District, a beautifully preserved former post town, with a stop by the riverside to take in the surroundings.

Next, you will visit the Hinoki Plant Dyeing Studio Gallery, where you will learn about traditional dyeing techniques used for noren curtains and have time to browse souvenirs.

The route then continues to Gozenshu Tsuji Brewery, a sake brewery with over 200 years of history, where you will enjoy a lunch featuring locally fermented ingredients and have time to explore.

In the afternoon, you will ride through Kuse Town before arriving at Kono Brewery, where vinegar, soy sauce, and miso are still crafted using natural, time-honored methods.

The tour concludes as you return to JR Chugoku-Katsuyama Station around 15:30, completing a journey through Maniwa’s living food culture and rural landscapes.
