Kumano Kodo Iseji Gastronomy Journey in Taiki

This overnight experience takes place in Taiki Town, a quiet rural community along the Kumano Kodo Iseji, the historic pilgrimage route linking Ise Grand Shrine and Kumano Sanzan. Here, everyday life has long unfolded alongside travelers on foot, guided by the seasons and the path through the mountains. You will stay at Minpaku Izuho, a traditional Japanese farmhouse where the smell of wood smoke lingers, and life moves slowly. This is a real home, lived in for generations, not a space made for tourists. At its heart is an irori hearth, where firelight dances on the beams and meals are cooked slowly with care. Your host, Izuho Fujiwara, grew up in Taiki Town and opened her home to travelers in 2018. Over the years, she has welcomed guests from Japan and around the world, many hoping to truly live everyday Japanese life rather than just see it. This experience was created to share that life with visitors. In the afternoon, you begin by splitting firewood and lighting the kamado (wood-fired stove), listening to the crackle of flames as rice cooks steadily in its iron pot. You harvest pesticide-free vegetables nearby, brush off the soil from their skins before bringing them into the kitchen. As evening settles in, Matsusaka beef is prepared as shabu-shabu over the irori. Thin slices meet hot broth, releasing a gentle sweetness that fills the room, enjoyed alongside the vegetables and freshly cooked rice. Stories flow naturally as the meal unfolds. Your host explains how the irori and kamado shaped daily family life, and how food, fire, and conversation have always been closely connected.
