My cooking lesson with Yuka was perfect! She was very organized, her instructions were very clear, and time was well managed. The food I learned to make was delicious and easy enough that I feel confident I can make it again when I return home, and no now I have the recipes she gave me to help. I’m very happy with my experience.

Hide was a very friendly and well-prepared host. There were 2 of us (1 vegan and 1 "all-eater") and he catered to both people individually. We were able to ask him lots of questions - his English was very good! There was a pleasant atmosphere and the sushi was excellent! Highly recommended♡

Exceeded expectations. Look for the metal sign in front of the restaurant. Yukihide spoke excellent english and made us feel at home. Instruction was fun and informative. Our group learned new tips for making vegan sushi and enjoyed the sushi we made.

Five stars all around! Hide was excellent to talk with, and we enjoyed making different types of vegan sushi. Ingredients were prepared ahead of time (which makes sense for the time allotted), and the specifics of how they were prepared and organized were not explicitly part of the class structure. However, we were able to ask Hide many questions about how he prepared and planned each rolls ingredients, which was very helpful! This is an excellent class for beginners learning to make vegan sushi.

Discover the Art of Shojin Ryori

Shojin Ryori, the traditional Buddhist cuisine of Japan, offers a unique way to explore the rich cultural heritage of Japanese food. Rooted in the principles of Zen Buddhism, this type of cooking is entirely plant-based and focuses on creating balance and harmony through the use of seasonal ingredients. In our exclusive Shojin Ryori classes, you have the opportunity to learn how to prepare these elegant dishes from experienced chefs who have mastered the art. Whether you are a seasoned cook or a curious beginner, these classes will provide you not only with cooking skills but also with a deeper understanding of the mindful approaches embedded within this ancient practice.

What to Expect in a Shojin Ryori Class

Our classes cater to all levels and are designed to offer hands-on experience in creating Shojin Ryori dishes. You will start by learning about the philosophy behind this spiritual cuisine, which emphasizes simple preparation, minimalism, and respect for nature. Guided by professional instructors, you will explore various seasonal ingredients native to Japan, such as tofu, seaweed, and an array of fresh vegetables, all of which play a crucial role in Shojin Ryori.

The classes typically begin with a demonstration of basic techniques, followed by an interactive cooking session where you'll create a complete meal, including appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. You'll also learn how to present your dishes with the aesthetic attention to detail that Japanese cuisine is renowned for. Throughout your class, you will discover tips on cooking with mindfulness and intention, cultivating a deeper connection to the food you prepare and consume.

Embrace a Zen Culinary Experience

Joining a Shojin Ryori cooking class offers more than just a skill-set—it's an immersion into a lifestyle of simplicity and mindfulness. As you practice the cooking techniques, you will also embrace the Zen philosophy of ‘shojin’, which means to exploit all efforts to excel and extend oneself to the maximum, fostering a high level of concentration and presence in the moment.

Imagine spending a few hours not only learning to cook but also finding peace and calm through the Zen teachings intertwined with the Shojin Ryori experience. This journey might even inspire you to bring this meditative approach back to your everyday cooking practices, enriching your kitchen routines with the balance and harmony that Shojin Ryori promotes.

Whether you are a culinary enthusiast intrigued by Japanese traditions or someone simply looking to enhance your knowledge and appreciation of plant-based diets, our Shojin Ryori classes are an excellent opportunity to dive deep into the heart of Japan’s culinary arts. Don’t miss the chance to transform your cooking experience into an enlightening and fulfilling pursuit of Zen cuisine.
