So amazing, thank you to our host Haime who went above and beyond. This vegan option for those who follow the diet, don’t eat raw fish, or want to learn a different way have to try. He went above and beyond to explain everything and invited us to dine in their restaurant for dinner, including making us a vegan dinner. I can’t recommend the class enough and look forward to teaching my family the recipe. Thank you, Haime!

My cooking lesson with Yuka was perfect! She was very organized, her instructions were very clear, and time was well managed. The food I learned to make was delicious and easy enough that I feel confident I can make it again when I return home, and no now I have the recipes she gave me to help. I’m very happy with my experience.

Hide was a very friendly and well-prepared host. There were 2 of us (1 vegan and 1 "all-eater") and he catered to both people individually. We were able to ask him lots of questions - his English was very good! There was a pleasant atmosphere and the sushi was excellent! Highly recommended♡

Exceeded expectations. Look for the metal sign in front of the restaurant. Yukihide spoke excellent english and made us feel at home. Instruction was fun and informative. Our group learned new tips for making vegan sushi and enjoyed the sushi we made.

Five stars all around! Hide was excellent to talk with, and we enjoyed making different types of vegan sushi. Ingredients were prepared ahead of time (which makes sense for the time allotted), and the specifics of how they were prepared and organized were not explicitly part of the class structure. However, we were able to ask Hide many questions about how he prepared and planned each rolls ingredients, which was very helpful! This is an excellent class for beginners learning to make vegan sushi.

Discover the Art of Shojin Ryori

Shojin Ryori, a revered culinary tradition in Japan, offers a serene and spiritual dining experience that emphasizes simplicity, balance, and seasonal ingredients. Originating from Buddhist temples, this vegetarian cuisine is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a journey towards mindfulness and appreciation of nature's bounty. If you're looking to immerse yourself in Japanese culture in a unique way, joining a Shojin Ryori cooking class is an enlightening experience that you shouldn't miss.

Shojin Ryori stands out due to its strict adherence to using no animal products, which aligns with the Buddhist principles of non-violence and respect for all living beings. Instead, it utilizes tofu, vegetables, seaweed, and grains, showcasing how these simple ingredients can be transformed into delightful dishes that nourish both the body and soul. In a cooking class, you will learn the art of creating meals that are not only nutritious but also visually appealing.

What to Expect in Shojin Ryori Cooking Classes

Participating in a Shojin Ryori cooking class offers more than just learning recipes; it's an immersive experience into the philosophy and techniques of this traditional Japanese cuisine. You'll begin by understanding the core principles behind Shojin Ryori and how to incorporate them into everyday cooking.

Classes typically start with a guided tour of a local market where instructors help you select the freshest, seasonal produce. This experience highlights the importance of seasonality and simplicity in Shojin Ryori. Following the market visit, classes are usually held in a serene setting that echoes the peaceful atmosphere of a Buddhist temple.

You'll dive into hands-on preparation of various dishes, such as gomadofu (sesame tofu), tsukemono (pickled vegetables), and nimono (simmered vegetable dishes). Instructors, often trained chefs with deep knowledge in Shojin Ryori, will guide you through each step, ensuring you understand the techniques and the philosophy behind each dish. By the end of the class, you'll be able to recreate a full course meal with confidence.

Why Choose Shojin Ryori Cooking Classes?

Engaging in Shojin Ryori cooking classes offers a multitude of benefits. Firstly, it's a perfect opportunity to enhance your cooking skills and learn new techniques that you can apply to various cuisines. These classes also provide insight into Japanese cultural traditions and philosophies, offering a deeper understanding of Japan beyond its well-known attractions.

Moreover, Shojin Ryori emphasizes a mindful approach to eating, encouraging you to savor each bite and appreciate the effort and thought behind every ingredient. It's a wonderful way to embrace a healthier lifestyle, focusing on plant-based ingredients and wholesome cooking methods.

Whether you're a vegetarian, a Japanese culture enthusiast, or simply someone interested in exploring new culinary horizons, Shojin Ryori cooking classes offer a rewarding and enriching experience. You'll leave not only with new skills and recipes but also with a refreshed perspective on food and its connection to well-being.
