Bar SAKURA

In Japan, a single cup of sake can carry the character of the place where it was brewed: its water, its rice, its climate. Bar SAKURA, a Japanese-style bar in the Higashi-Shinsaibashi district of Osaka, builds its evenings around that idea. The bar pours only Japanese-made drinks, gathered from breweries and distilleries across the country, so that each glass becomes a small stop on a tour of Japan. The room sits on the second floor of a building in Minami, and the noise of the street fades once the door closes. Soft lighting falls across warm wood, and traditional Japanese touches meet clean, modern lines. Eight seats line the counter, where conversation with the staff comes easily, while four tables suit small groups. Staff in kimono greet each guest, and every member of the team speaks English, offering context on the drinks and the culture behind them. The all-you-can-drink plan brings together more than 30 varieties, including sake from Kyoto, Nara, Wakayama and Hiroshima, shochu from Kagoshima and Oita, Japanese gin and whisky, wine from Okayama, and fruit liqueurs. A crisp, bone-dry junmai poured beside a rounded sweet potato shochu shows how differently each region speaks. Limited-release Japanese whiskies are also offered by the glass. To accompany the drinks, the bar serves sukiyaki made with carefully selected Kuroge Wagyu, the same beef used at its sister restaurants, a warm taste of Japanese cuisine alongside the pour. For guests coming from an evening of luxury dining nearby, it offers a quiet, unhurried nightcap. Late into the night, the last sip lingers, and the city outside feels pleasantly far away.
