The first Nagoya branch of the Sumiyaki Gyutan Higashiyama chain brings Sendai's iconic grilled beef tongue, or gyutan, to Osu Shopping Street. Originating after World War II at a yakitori restaurant in Sendai, this unique dish quickly gained widespread popularity.

The beef tongue served here is sourced from the root section, which makes up less than half of the entire tongue and is prized for its beautiful marbling and tender texture. The beef is grilled over 1,000-degree charcoal fires, which evenly distribute radiant heat rich in far-infrared rays. This method locks in flavor, melts excess fat, and penetrates deep into the meat, ensuring it is tender, juicy and infused with a smoky aroma.

The menu, as expected but to the delight of tongue lovers, revolves around the Sendai beef tongue served in different ways. It’s grounded into meatballs, served as a thick-cut steak, or roasted and tossed into a salad. They even served the tongue roe in a yukhoe, a type of Korean-style tartare. For a hearty classic, try the gyutan with barley rice, made using Miyagi Prefecture's hitomebore rice, paired with slow-simmered oxtail soup.

Spanning three floors, the restaurant offers counter seating on the first floor, tatami-style seating with recessed floors and tables on the second and a covered terrace on the third.
