Saisyokukennbi
Tamura wagyu, a room named after Genji, and an evening that holds its shape.
Restaurant Details
Kinshicho sits in the eastern part of Tokyo, Japan — a neighborhood that moves at its own pace, neither trying to be what Shinjuku is nor what Asakusa was. A short walk from the station, down a side street where the evening light falls quietly, Kinshicho Yakiniku Saishoku Kenbi occupies the first floor of a building that gives little away from the outside.
Step in, and the atmosphere shifts. The interior takes its cues from a traditional Japanese inn — stone-flooring in the entryway, dark wooden lattice panels, low lighting that settles over each table like a private room. All seats are enclosed booth-style. Each table carries a name drawn from The Tale of Genji, Japan's ancient court narrative: Kiritsubo, Wakamurasaki, Yugao. The space holds eighteen people across five tables. It feels smaller than that.
At the center of the menu is Tamura Beef — wagyu raised by a single producer in Tottori Prefecture, selected for the balance between marbling and lean red meat. The tongue arrives as a tasting comparison: thick-cut and thin-cut side by side, both from the same animal, their differences clear once you begin. Sirloin is prepared sukiyaki-style, laid into a house-made broth and lifted just as the edges begin to yield. The fillet steak sandwich — a course-only item — arrives warm, the meat pink at the center, the sauce reduced to something quiet and deep.
Smoked caviar yukke is presented tableside, its casing opened with a small release of smoke. The gesture is measured, unhurried.
You come for the wagyu. You stay because the evening, in this room, has a different quality to it.
