Discover the timeless charm of Watasou, where unagi cuisine meets over 110 years of tradition in Yamatokoriyama, Nara, near Nikaido Station.

Restaurant Details

Nestled in the heart of Yamatokoriyama, Nara, Watasou is a historic gem that has been delighting guests for over 110 years. Originally known as 'Wataya' during the Ansei era of Edo, this restaurant offers a unique dining experience steeped in tradition. Specializing in unagi (eel) cuisine, Watasou is renowned for its signature dish, 'mamushi,' where eel is expertly layered within rice, cooked with a secret sauce that tantalizes the taste buds.

The culinary journey at Watasou is enhanced by the use of fresh water sourced from a well on the premises, ensuring the highest quality in every dish. Guests can savor a variety of eel preparations, including umaki, kabayaki, shirayaki, and uzaku, all grilled in the traditional Kansai style.

Housed in a traditional ryokan building, Watasou exudes a nostalgic charm reminiscent of the Meiji era. The tatami rooms, adorned with calligraphy and decorative items, offer a homely and rustic inn-like atmosphere, perfect for intimate gatherings or larger celebrations in their private rooms and large hall.

Located conveniently near Nikaido Station along the Ise Highway, Watasou is easily accessible yet offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. The entrance through the southern gate adds to its secluded charm.

The restaurant is currently operated by the sixth generation, with the son of the proprietress at the helm of the kitchen, ensuring that the legacy of warm hospitality and culinary excellence continues. Reservations are required, and guests are welcomed with the proprietress's renowned warm hospitality, making each visit a memorable experience.
