Experience Details
Few dishes capture the comfort of Japanese home cooking quite like tempura udon.
Crispy tempura, chewy handmade noodles, and a savory soy sauce-based broth come together in a dish loved across Japan for its balance of textures and flavors.
In this cozy cooking class in Kobe, learn to make this classic dish from scratch with a local host passionate about home cooking and cultural exchange.
Your host, Ayumi, will welcome you into her Japanese-style apartment in a quiet residential neighborhood of Kobe. After a short introduction to the ingredients and cooking process, you’ll head into the kitchen to begin preparing your meal together in a warm, relaxed home setting.
Start by making udon noodles from scratch using traditional methods. Knead the dough by hand and even with your feet, a playful and memorable part of the experience that helps create the noodles’ signature chewy texture. Your host will guide you step by step and share practical cooking tips that can easily be recreated at home.
Next, prepare tempura using shrimp and seasonal vegetables. Learn how to coat and fry each ingredient until light and crispy while discovering techniques to achieve the perfect texture without making the batter too heavy.
Once everything is ready, sit down together to enjoy your freshly made tempura udon. Over lunch, chat with your host about Japanese food culture, daily life, and dining etiquette.
Ayumi enjoys connecting with guests from around the world, making this experience feel personal, welcoming, and full of meaningful exchange.
Before the class ends, take home a special souvenir: a pair of chopsticks decorated with handmade origami and mizuhiki holders to remember your time in Kobe.
This experience offers more than a cooking lesson. It’s a chance to discover Japanese home cooking and local culture through the perspective of a friendly Kobe host eager to share her favorite recipes and traditions.
