Takoyaki and okonomiyaki are Osaka specialties that have taken the world by storm and become two of the country’s most beloved street foods. In this Japanese cooking class in Kyoto, take your love for these dishes one step further by learning to make them yourself, guided by friendly and knowledgeable instructors.
You'll find the cooking venue just 10 minutes from Sanjo and Kawaramachi Stations. Once aprons are on, you’ll watch how an instructor trained by a Japanese food expert prepares the ingredients and uses the grill to cook the dishes before making them yourself during the hands-on cooking session.
First is takoyaki, sizzling dumplings filled with octopus chunks, typically topped with a savory sauce and bonito flakes. With help from your host, you’ll learn to make these dumplings bouncy and chewy for a delicious and authentic result.
Next is okonomiyaki. This decadent, savory pancake is a staple of Osaka cuisine and is made from a mixture of batter and cabbage filled with ingredients like pork and seafood. It is traditionally cooked on a teppanyaki (hot iron grill) until golden brown, then lashed out with sauces as a finishing touch.
