Our guide Tak was great! We had so much fun walking around Kyoto and trying the different kinds of food. At the end of the tour, we asked him to direct us to a particular shop we were looking for. Not only did he take us there, he also stayed after to make sure we did not have issues with communication! Thanks for your help Tak!

Our guide, Eduardo was really great! We had so much fun and tasted so many local dishes that we hadn’t tried. We had sweets for the kids and adults, tried food at different restaurants with sake and drinks and Eduardo gave us some history on the Gion and Pontocho districts as well as so much information about Kyoto that was really interesting. He was an excellent guide and I highly recommend this tour. Thanks Eduardo!

Sae was our guide and she was amazing. She knew the intricate history of the whole area. She picked fantastic restaurants for our dishes which included the best Ramen we have had In Japan. She made my son feel so special because she picked foods that she knew he would like. This is a food and history tour. Come ready to eat!

Great guide, beautiful night, and a great way to start our tour of Japan. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a “first night” experience in Kyoto, as not only does the walking tour feel good after the long flight, the introduction to language and etiquette has proven useful during our time in Japan.

Our group of 6 had a wonderful tour of Uji on April 7! With excellent English, Terumi S. led the tour which focused on a wide variety of Matcha and Green Tea experiences. We especially liked Terumi putting tea-making in Japan in context by pointing out the differences as we went along. Even though it was raining we were able to do all of the activities indoors. I especially liked the tea ceremony where the women were in full kimono dress with Terumi translating the ritual. She went the extra mile to get us to our next appointment by riding the train with us and showing us the connection! Arigato for an exceptional tour!

We had a wonderful experience with Michie who spoke fluent English and was very knowledgeable of the area and food. Our daughter is Coeliac and Michie made sure she was able to have gluten free safe options. Would recommend to anyone with dietary restrictions.

I really enjoyed my Flavors of Japan food tour. We toured the Nihombashi area in Tokyo in April with Ramona and Mandy. They were charming and well informed about both the area and Japanese food. They took us to speciality stores and explained about the importance of regional food, we could try some of the products. The lunch we ate was delightful! Can't remember the name of the restaurant. This tour was so enjoyable with great tour guides. Mandy and Ramona didn't make us hurry so the tour ended up being longer than it advertised.

This tour was a combination of a walking and food tour. Lauren was our guided and it was a very fun and interactive experience. Lauren gave lots of unique insight into the city and information about Japanese culture. She was a great guide and a lovely person, great to get to know and definitely made the tour worth our while. The food was delicious and really filling (probably more than enough) so I would suggest that you arrive on an empty stomach. Once and a life time experience you don't want to miss out on!

Discover the Essence of Soba

Soba, a traditional Japanese noodle made from buckwheat flour, is an integral part of Japanese cuisine known for its unique texture and earthy flavor. It is as versatile as it is delicious, served in a variety of ways across different regions of Japan. Whether you are savoring it hot in a flavorful broth or enjoying it cold with a dipping sauce, each bite offers a delightful experience that is both authentic and satisfying.

When you embark on a soba food experience, you are not just enjoying a meal; you are partaking in a centuries-old tradition that reflects Japanese culture and culinary artistry. From the way soba noodles are painstakingly crafted to the skill required in their proper preparation, each step is a testament to Japan’s dedication to culinary excellence. By participating in these experiences, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the rich history of soba and even get hands-on with making the noodles yourself.

Understanding the Varieties of Soba

Soba noodles can be enjoyed in many forms, each offering its own distinct taste and presentation. One popular version is zaru soba, where the noodles are served cold on a bamboo tray, paired with a chilled dipping sauce called tsuyu. This version of soba is particularly refreshing in the summer months. Alternatively, you may try kake soba, which is served hot in a savory broth, perfect for warming up during colder seasons. If you’re looking to experience regional specialties, be sure to try Tokoro’s tororo soba, which includes grated yam on top, or the richer duck broth soba found in the kamosoba.

Each soba dish tells a story of its region and carries unique flavors that stem from local ingredients and preparation methods. By exploring the varieties of soba, you not only indulge your palate but also gain insight into the diversity of Japanese culinary traditions.

Unleashing the Culinary Artist Within You

Soba food experiences often offer interactive and educational workshops where you can learn the delicate art of soba-making. Under the guidance of skilled chefs, you’ll discover the careful process of kneading, rolling, and cutting the dough into thin noodles. This hands-on experience is not only educational but also immensely rewarding, as you culminate the session by cooking and tasting your own creation.

These workshops provide a deeper appreciation of the effort and skill that goes into making soba noodles. Whether you are a novice in the kitchen or an experienced home cook, the art of soba-making challenges and hones your skills, leaving you with a newfound respect for this staple dish. Moreover, such experiences often emphasize the importance of quality ingredients, from the buckwheat flour down to the purest water, reflecting the Japanese philosophy of achieving harmony and balance in their cuisine.

Embarking on a soba food experience is more than just a gastronomic journey; it is an immersion into the heart of Japanese culinary traditions. Whether you are seated at a rustic countryside eatery or a city-based kitchen studio, each experience promises not only a meal but a cherished memory of taste, culture, and craftsmanship.
