Tucked inside Osaka’s historic Noh Theatre precinct, this beautiful Japanese-style restaurant offers an elegant meal featuring Japanese Black beef and washoku-inspired starters.

Restaurant Details

One of Osaka’s most historic Noh theatres, the Sugie Noh Theatre, was built in 1917 in Kishiwada. The site is Japan’s official Tangible Cultural Property and part of the noh stage that occupies a space in the former Kishiwada Castle. Today, the space transforms into a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle, welcoming diners with an idyllic courtyard of raked white gravel and pine trees: Cafe Kofuan.

This stunning theatre operates as a restaurant during lunchtime, becoming the jewel in the crown of this historic site. The kitchen team crafts beautifully executed dishes that highlight the finest local produce. The menu blends traditional Japanese flavors with innovative creativity, celebrating regional ingredients and putting local cuisine at the forefront of the dining experience.

For instance, the course may begin with a delicate taste of homemade tofu prepared in various ways, such as sashimi or agedashitofu (deep fried and served in broth). A standout feature is often the Japanese Black beef shabu-shabu, showcasing tender, rich meat that melts in the mouth.

Thanks to the space's distinctive historic architectural details, each table at Cafe Kofuan feels like a private dining experience. The winding hallways lead to the outdoor Noh stage, where the roof allows natural light to flood the white gravel below — a rare feature from the Meiji and Taisho eras. The layout separates the stage from the dining area, letting diners feel the seasonal winds and experience the outdoor setting where Noh was originally performed.
