You Become the Street-Food Chef: Unlike a standard cooking class where you chop veggies and stir a pot, making Kottu requires a theatrical, rhythmic technique. You’ll get to wield the traditional twin metal blades on a scorching hot griddle, smashing and chopping the roti to that signature sizzling soundtrack. It’s half cooking, half percussion performance! Live Customization at the Griddle: You won't just follow a recipe. You'll choose your own protein (spicy chicken, rich beef, fresh seafood, or hearty veg/egg) and dial in your preferred spice level right at the hot plate. You are in full control of your perfect plate. The Ultimate Spicy-Cold Pairing: Kottu is bold, savory, and packs a punch. We don't just serve dinner; we teach you why a crisp, cold local brew (like a Lion Lager or robust Lion Stout) is the absolute perfect antidote. The contrast of the hot, crispy roti with the ice-cold beer creates a flavor explosion you simply can't get at a restaurant.
Dinner
Discover the rich flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine in this hands-on cooking class in Weligama. Meet your local host and begin the experience with an introduction to traditional Sri Lankan spices, fresh ingredients, and cooking techniques used in everyday local meals. You can choose between two popular Sri Lankan dishes to prepare during the class: Option 1 – Kottu Roti Learn how to cook Sri Lanka’s most famous street food. Chop roti, vegetables, eggs, or chicken and mix everything together on a hot pan with aromatic spices to create the iconic Kottu Roti. Option 2 – Traditional Rice & Curry Learn how to prepare a classic Sri Lankan meal including rice and several flavorful curries such as dhal curry, vegetable curry, and fresh coconut sambol. During the experience, you’ll take part in a fully interactive cooking session, learning authentic recipes you can recreate at home. After cooking, sit down and enjoy your freshly prepared Sri Lankan meal, together with additional local flavors and stories from your host. This cooking experience is a perfect way to explore Sri Lankan culture through food while enjoying a relaxed evening in Weligama.

Best Kottu you’ll ever have!

What a lovely dinner! The cooking class was great and the host knew a lot of history and information about the food, ingredients, and Sri Lankan culture. The best part was sharing the meal with the other guests and having lovely conversation around the table after. The host was so kind and funny! As a solo traveller it was so nice to connect with some new people in a meaningful way. Totally recommend this class! Best kottu I’ve ever had too.

Fun cooking class

Super fun cooking class! We found it because it was the only one we found offering a Kottu class and we had a great time (and a great recipe to take away). We also just booked two days before, which was not a problem at all. Definitely recommend!

Best Kottu in Sri Lanka!

We had the best time learning how to cook traditional Sri Lankan Kottu with Romesh! 🇱🇰🍳 He knew so much about the dish and made the whole experience really fun and easy to follow. I found the cooking class on Hostelworld and reached out to Romesh via WhatsApp. Booking was super easy and uncomplicated. We were only a small group, which made the whole evening feel really personal and familiar. Everyone got to try every step themselves, and we literally made the Kottu from dough to the finished...read more

We had an unforgettable stay at the Surf & Yoga Retreat in Weligama! Danny was an amazing surf instructor—super patient, professional, and made learning so much fun. Ebru led the yoga sessions beautifully, creating a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. The retreat is just steps from the beach and has such a cozy, friendly vibe. Perfect for couples looking to surf, unwind, and enjoy the beautiful Sri Lankan coast!
