Experience Details
Once presaging the start of a new era, Osaka's district of Shinsekai, which translates to “New World”, was built at the turn of the 20th century and modeled to resemble Paris and New York’s Coney Island. During the war, however, the area was abandoned to its own luck, and, years later, its unique, eclectic mix of old and new transformed it into a bustling tourist destination, home to many of Osaka’s legendary street foods that have cemented the city’s reputation as “Japan’s kitchen”.
In this tour, a guide familiar with the ins and outs of the area will take you exploring this nostalgic district through neon-lit alleyways, retro arcades and the bustle of street food stalls in a hunt for delicious foods. You’ll taste a whopping 15 dishes and discover the delicious and unexpected dishes that the local food scene has to offer.
You will sample foods at five different eateries, such as izakaya, restaurants, stalls and bars. These are the types of places where residents typically gather, feasting on delicious and affordable food. Guiding you from one venue to the other, your bilingual host and tour guide will teach you all about the area’s history and its long-standing food culture.
You’ll also put your knowledge to good use by sampling fifteen of the most famous street foods! Typically included in this tour are karaage (fried chicken), yakitori skewers, Osaka’s classic takoyaki octopus battered dumplings, udon noodles, oden hotpot, deep-fried kushikatsu skewers, Japanese chicken wings (tebasaki) and more. You will also have the chance to sample two drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and cheer kanpai with locals. Prepare for an evening that you won’t forget in this gourmet introduction to Osaka!
