This was a true hi-light of our trip. Yoko was both kind and welcoming to our party. She went out of her way to accommodate us even though I got the time wrong. So appreciated the menu, which took into account our vegetarian guest. We were truly delighted with the class and our experience. I highly recommend the class. Thank you, Yoko

I recently had the pleasure of attending a wagashi class with Yukiko Uramoto, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, Yukiko welcomed us with a warm and bright smile to her cozy home, with her dining room and kitchen serving as the perfect classroom setting. As Vegans, we were particularly impressed by how thoughtfully Yukiko adapted the ingredients, ensuring that we could fully enjoy every aspect of the class. Yukiko’s passion for Japanese culture and food was evident throughout, and she patiently guided us through each step with care and enthusiasm. We learned how to make several traditional wagashi, including the Hanami Dango, Fruits Daifuku, Warabi Mochi, and Ice Cream Mochi. By the end of the class, we were treated to a delightful tasting session, when Yukiko served us green tea and a special Isobe Mochi, which was a delicious and unexpected treat. Overall, it was a 5/5 experience. Highly recommended for Vegans, and anyone interested in learning more about Japanese sweets and culture!

Our instructor was welcoming, inspiring, and very attentive! She offered different options to enjoy this delicious and cultural sweet. Yukiko Uramoto explained to us how to make mochi and its significance. The way to knead the Hanami Dango, roll it, mix it to achieve the desired color, and place it in water until it floats. The Warabi Mochi made in the copper pan brought back memories of my grandmother, the mochi ice cream bit was very considered to include vegans by not using milk and eggs in the ice cream. We also tasted a delicious Mochi rolled up in seaweed, a delicious dish to start the day! I highly recommend this experience to everyone! Thank you so much.

It was a wonderful experience to learn a bit more about Japanese tradition. Yukiko Uramoto welcomed us into her home and was very kind and attentive. During class, explained to us the meaning of mochi and how important it is to make it in January (for good luck throughout the year). For Girls' and Boys' Day, to wish them health and prosperity. We learned how to make Hanami Dango, Warabi Mochi, Mochi Ice Cream, Fruit Daifuku, and Mochi with Nori. In the end, we tasted everything, and it was all delicious. I highly recommend this experience to everyone who wants to learn about Wagashi. Thank you so much.

Exploring Vegan Delights in Kanagawa

Kanagawa, a stunning prefecture in Japan, is a fascinating place to explore vegan delicacies. With its blend of traditional Japanese flavors and modern twists, Kanagawa offers a wide range of vegan food experiences that cater to every palate. Whether you're wandering through the bustling streets of Yokohama, admiring the breathtaking views of Hakone, or relaxing along the serene coast of Kamakura, you'll find an abundance of vegan options waiting to tantalize your taste buds.

Start your journey with vegan takes on popular Japanese dishes. Many restaurants in the area offer plant-based versions of sushi, substituting fresh vegetables and tofu for fish, wrapped in seaweed and enhanced with a dash of soy sauce or wasabi. Don't miss out on vegan ramen, a comforting dish where the rich, savory broth is made from mushrooms and seaweed, layered with vegetables and various plant-based proteins.

Discover Authentic Vegan Experiences

Beyond the vegan versions of traditional dishes, Kanagawa is home to unique vegan experiences that promise to surprise and delight. Enjoy a day touring a vegan cooking class where you can learn the art of preparing Japanese meals with fresh, local produce. From learning to craft the perfect vegan tempura to mastering the delicate balance of flavors in a vegan miso soup, these experiences offer not only a meal but a connection to the culture and culinary traditions of Japan.

Many experiences also include visits to local markets where you can discover a variety of Japanese ingredients. Learn to choose the best seasonal vegetables and explore the rich umami flavors that Japanese cuisine is famous for. These tours often highlight using miso, soy sauce, and a variety of other fermented products that are staples in a vegan diet.

Relaxing Vegan-Friendly Spots

After a day of exploring, relax at one of Kanagawa’s serene vegan-friendly spots. Many cafes and teahouses offer delightful spaces where you can unwind with a cup of locally sourced green tea and a selection of vegan sweets. Try traditional desserts like daifuku and mochi, which are often naturally vegan, made with ingredients like rice flour and sweet bean paste.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, consider staying at a traditional ryokan that caters to vegan travelers. These accommodations can provide you with beautifully prepared vegan versions of a kaiseki meal, a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner that showcases the freshest seasonally available ingredients.

In Kanagawa, vegan travelers will find a landscape rich with culinary adventure and authentic cultural experiences. From innovative vegan dishes and cooking classes to relaxing stays in nature-friendly accommodations, this prefecture offers delightful options for all.
