Yakiniku Ueno Taishoen, a yakiniku fixture in Tokyo, continues to preserve the beloved “good old Taishoen flavor” that has captured the hearts of locals since 1963.

Restaurant Details

Yakiniku Ueno Taishoen, a legendary yakiniku chain in Ueno, has been delighting loyal patrons since 1963. It stays true to yakiniku’s traditional flavors and Korean soul food origins while maintaining its signature "Taishoen flavor."

Its annex, or bekkan, branch embraces this through its design. The spacious dining area features wooden-themed tables, while the private room — decked in tatami, earthen walls, and sunken tables — offers an intimate setting for up to 30 guests.

On paper, the menu may seem lackluster, missing the extravagant touches often found at high-end yakiniku establishments. Yet, Taishoen perfects the classics. The offerings are meant to be appreciated on the palate rather than as visual spectacles. The only exception might be the salt-marinated beef tongue, for instance — thin slices wrapped around spring onions, tied with Chinese chive ribbons to resemble a gift.

At lunchtime, the spotlight shifts to the wagyu yukhoe bowl, a Korean-style beef tartare served atop a rice bowl, showcasing the richness of finely chopped raw wagyu. The classics continue across the menu, starting with unlimited namul and kimchi before leading into mains like wagyu chateaubriand (for those choosing the premium course) or premium loin (available in the standard course). A seafood platter featuring shrimp, scallops and squid, as well as options like chicken, round out the selection.

Classically rooted, Yakiniku Ueno Taishoen proves that tradition stands the test of time.
