Experience Details

For seven centuries, the samurai ruled Japan, until the late 19th century. In other words, post-samurai Japan has existed for a shorter time than the samurai reign itself. Naturally, the fall of the samurai was a monumental moment. And that’s where this tour comes in: Ueno Area, where the samurai fell and Japan rose.

Does that sound far-fetched? It should, but it still holds truth. Ueno is the very place where samurai fought a decisive battle against a rising power that would topple their rule. The samurai lost, and the new force won, setting the stage for Japan to emerge as a global powerhouse.

On this tour, your expert guide will immerse you in the moments that shaped Japan’s transformation. You’ll learn how the Tokugawa shogunate laid the foundation for 260 years of peace, beginning in the early 1600s, and how a single battle in Ueno sealed the samurai's fate.

As the samurai were defeated, Japan laid the groundwork to become a cultural and global force, rising with soft power that would change the world.

As you walk through Ueno with your small group, your guide will reveal the “why” behind each historical shift and share fascinating stories about the sights along the way, bringing history to life with every step.
