Experience Details

Step into Mikiko's welcoming home in Nagoya and discover how making sushi brings family and friends together.

Inspired by the joy of preparing homemade sushi with family and friends, she created this intimate class to share the warmth of Japanese home cooking with guests from around the world.

After meeting Mikiko at Fujigaoka Station, take a short walk to her welcoming home, where a cup of tea or water awaits before the cooking begins. Small class sizes mean you'll receive plenty of personal guidance, have time to ask questions, and learn each technique at a comfortable pace.

The lesson begins with one of the foundations of Japanese cooking: preparing flavorful dashi and using it to make comforting miso soup with whole shrimp heads. You will also prepare classic side dishes, including fluffy tamagoyaki and spinach with sesame dressing, and learn practical techniques easy to recreate at home.

Then, it's time to make sushi. Learn how to season sushi rice, slice fresh sashimi, shape nigiri, and roll tuna and cucumber maki using fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients. Since you'll prepare everything yourself, you'll leave with practical skills you can use long after the class.

Cooking together also becomes a chance to learn more about Japanese food culture. Mikiko shares the stories behind the dishes, from the everyday comfort of miso soup to the history of sushi and the role of tamagoyaki in home cooking.

When everything is ready, gather around the table to enjoy your handmade meal together.

Savor the fresh flavors, capture a few memorable photos, and leave with recipes, practical skills, and the confidence to recreate your own sushi gathering long after your journey in Japan.
