An amazing omakase dinner in Kyoto. An intimate six person counter experience watching the chef create magic. Every thing we tasted was out of this world. The presentation was exceptional. It was a treat to watch the knife work and plating over the two and a half hours we were there. Highly recommend!

We had a wonderful time at Sushi Tempura Gion Iwai. The introductory dinner was delicious and we were well sated by the end of the evening. The two very friendly chefs were deft in their skills and, though the language barrier was there, we were able to find out what we were eating! These staff was also very friendly.
One comment…. This restaurant was very difficult to find, especially as its name is not well marked, at least for those of us who do not speak Japanese. When we did find it—on the second floor of the building—we were still not sure we had the right place, again the language barrier. And until I gave them my confirmation papers, they were not sure about us either!
All in all I very much recommend dining here.

overall, everything was super fresh and delicious. it was the best egg custard we had in japan! but most of all, the service was really great, from the chef’s hospitality and skill work to the staff saying goodbye at the elevator outside the restaurant. thank you team Kyoto Sushi Matsumoto!

We had our last meal in Japan at this lovely restaurant in Kyoto. Please note, it’s in a narrow alley tucked behind a building so very hard to find and well worth it. From the moment we walked in we were greeted like family. Each dish was beyond fresh and beautifully presented with local seasonal garnishes. The husband and wife team are engaging and make every effort to describe the dishes in English. The wife had very good English and was very interested to talk with us. The husband, chef, is a Red Sox fan so we enjoyed hearing that. The courses were well balanced between fresh raw fish and cooked plates. I highly recommend this restaurant. Of our 16 dinners it was one of the top picks and the best one to have the night before leaving this beautiful country.

How to reserve sushi restaurants in Kyoto?
You can secure a table at a sushi restaurant in Kyoto by directly calling the sushi restaurant in advance. Some foreign travelers have difficulties doing this due to the language barrier, so an alternative is to use a restaurant reservation service on the internet. Websites like byFood help foreigners make reservations. You can narrow down the area where you would like to eat and find restaurants that fit your budget using a range of filters on byFood. Once you have found a Kyoto sushi restaurant that you would like to dine at, simply make a reservation by entering your details on the sushi restaurant page. ByFood will contact the restaurant on your behalf and email you with a confirmation if the reservation is successful. If the sushi restaurant is unable to take your reservation, you will receive a declined email.
Is a reservation required for sushi restaurants in Kyoto?
Some sushi restaurants in Kyoto will not take reservations, but others will definitely require one. This will depend on the individual sushi restaurant, however if you want to go to a high-end restaurant then a prior reservation is always needed.
What is the average cost of a meal at sushi restaurants in Kyoto?
This depends on the type of sushi restaurant and the ingredients they use, however you can expect to pay around 2500 yen for sushi at a restaurant in Kyoto. The price at conveyor belt sushi restaurants depends on each plate you eat (with some plates starting as low as 100 yen each), and there are also high-class sushi restaurants which can cost between 5000 yen and 10,000 yen, or more.
