Great way to start your Japan experience! We were lucky, our group was just 2 persons (just us 😉) so we had the full attention of our guide Masa. He gave a lot of information on the area and its history, on how to order in a restaurant, on the food etc. Gets you started for the rest of your Japan experience. Thanks!

We enjoyed a food tour which started out with 2 Izakayas in/near Omoide Yokocho. At each Izakaya, the tour company has negotiated a pre-set menu of many dishes and drinks. Each customer can then choose up to 3 food items and 3 drinks. The selection was quite good, we had 2 people with seafood allergies and there were still many outstanding things to choose from. The menus also offer a good variety - plenty of things that everyone likes, and a few exotic things for more adventerous travelers! The quality of the dishes were all quite good - we feel we are pretty knowledgeable culinary travelers and we were more than happy with the quality of the food and drink. The evening ended with drinks at one of the small bars in Golden Gai, We got a great tour of the Golden Gai area where we got to see the tiny unique bars and vibrant nightlife. The place we went to had an amazing selection of Japanese Whiskeys and even a few house-made(?) whiskey which was quite good.  The tour company was very easy to deal with - my tour was somewhat customized, and they were kind enough to arrange for our guide to meet us at our hotel, saving us from having to search and locate the designated meeting place.  Our guide, Masa was outstanding and a delightful, fun travel companion. He pointed out other sights all along our walking route, including a Shinto shrine and the Godzilla head. Our group is on the older side, and Masa's enthusiasm gave the whole tour a fun vibe for everyone!!!

Wonderful experience with Aki learning more about Japanese food and drink culture, with tons of delicious food in establishments that truly felt local. We were also super grateful for him working around a gluten sensitivity and saw that he was attentive to various food preferences amongst our group. Learned about the Ueno area and had an all around fantastic time!

Aki was an incredible guide, very personable and an all around pleasure to spend an evening with. Even more impressive was his ability to work with my wife’s Celiac disease. He made sure I had something to eat and drink at every stop. Cannot say enough good things, nor could I recommend this more highly. Arigatou gozaimasu!

Discover the Best Yakitori Experiences in Tokyo

Yakitori, a popular Japanese dish consisting of skewered chicken pieces, is not just a meal but an experience to savor. In Tokyo, the heart of this culinary delight, you will find a plethora of options to enjoy this traditional delicacy. Whether you are a local or a tourist, exploring the yakitori scene in Tokyo is a must-do activity that combines delicious food, cultural immersion, and a vibrant social atmosphere. From cozy izakayas to modern eating joints, the city offers a variety of yakitori experiences that will please your taste buds.

Enjoy Authentic Yakitori in Traditional Settings

For those seeking an authentic experience, traditional yakitori stalls, known as "yatai," provide a rustic charm and authenticity that is hard to beat. These mobile stalls, often found in bustling neighborhoods, offer a chance to enjoy yakitori just like the locals do. The intimate and lively atmosphere, combined with the enticing smoky scent of grilling chicken, makes for an unforgettable meal. Furthermore, many of these stalls pride themselves on using time-honored grilling techniques, such as burning charcoal made from hardwood, which imparts a distinct flavor that is uniquely Japanese.

These yatai are perfect for a casual night out, where you can delve into a variety of chicken cuts, each seasoned to perfection. Popular cuts include momo (chicken thigh), tsukune (chicken meatballs), and kawa (chicken skin), all skewered and grilled to juicy perfection.

Explore Modern and Elevated Yakitori Experiences

Tokyo’s yakitori scene isn't limited to traditional setups. The city also boasts a number of contemporary dining options where yakitori is served with a twist. In these modern establishments, chefs apply innovative techniques and pairings, elevating yakitori to new culinary heights. Think of creative dishes like truffle-infused tsukune or yakitori served with gourmet sauces that tantalize the palette in unexpected ways.

These modern restaurants often feature open kitchens, allowing diners to watch the skilled chefs at work, expertly flipping skewers over decorative grills. The ambiance is usually sleek and stylish, blending the old with the new, ensuring a fresh dining experience that remains true to the traditional essence of yakitori.

Embark on a yakitori journey in Tokyo and explore the different styles and settings this vibrant city offers.
