Experience Details
In eastern Hokkaido, Lake Kussharo spreads beneath open skies and forested hills.
Formed by an ancient volcanic eruption, the lake is alive with geothermal energy, and warm springs still bubble along its shores, shaping the landscape.
Your experience begins on the peaceful edge of Wakoto Peninsula, where a professional local guide welcomes you and introduces the basics of stand-up paddleboarding.
After a short safety briefing and instruction, you step onto the calm water and begin to glide across the lake.
The rhythm of the paddle soon settles into a gentle flow. Ripples move outward with each stroke while the surrounding forest reflects on the clear surface of the lake. Bird calls echo across the shoreline, and the cool air carries the scent of fresh water and trees.
Your destination is Oyakotsu Jigoku, a geothermal area where hot spring water naturally emerges along the lakeshore.
There, you will see steam rising softly from the ground, and warm mineral water flows into the lake. Using the spring's natural heat, you will prepare a traditional local snack by boiling eggs directly in the hot spring water.
As the eggs cook, take time to enjoy the landscape's stillness. The warmth of the geothermal ground contrasts with the cool breeze from the lake, creating a unique moment in nature.
Once ready, crack open the freshly cooked onsen eggs and enjoy their soft texture and rich flavor beside the water.
Floating on Lake Kussharo gives a rare chance to relax and feel Hokkaido’s natural rhythm.
With a knowledgeable local guide, this experience blends outdoor adventure, geothermal culture, and the calm beauty of one of Japan’s most striking lakes.
