Experience Details

In Nara, a city where history whispers from every temple and alley, the Takayama chasen (bamboo tea whisks) carries centuries of craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

In this intimate workshop, you will witness the quiet mastery of artisans who have devoted their lives to shaping bamboo into elegant tea whisks.

The studio smells faintly of fresh bamboo and tatami. At the same time, sunlight filters through paper screens, illuminating the gentle curves of tools lined neatly along shelves.

Your host introduces the origins of chasen production, tracing its journey from the Muromachi period to its role in modern tea ceremonies.

Guests observe each precise motion as the craftsman slices, bends, and smooths the bamboo, understanding how every cut affects the whisk’s function and beauty.

After the demonstration, you get hands-on guidance from the master to prepare matcha. Feel the gentle resistance of the bamboo whisk, hear the soft, steady rhythm as you whisk, and inhale the warm, grassy aroma of the tea. Each movement is calming, and the host explains its meaning in the tea ceremony.

A small selection of wagashi accompanies the matcha, its delicate sweetness highlighting the tea’s subtle bitterness.

Throughout, the host shares insights into etiquette, philosophy, and the ritual's cultural context.

By the end of the session, you leave not only with a deeper appreciation of Takayama chasen but with a lasting sensory memory of Nara’s living traditions.
