Gion Hitsuji is a cozy restaurant with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The food was beautifully presented with seasonal decorations, and it was clear that a lot of attention was paid to the ingredients and presentation. My favorite dishes were the lotus root with bacon, plum and shiso, and the daikon radish and konnyaku with spicy cod roe butter. I was also pleasantly surprised by the yuba, which had a lovely creamy texture. The steak was delicious and another highlight of the meal, although I felt the sauce slightly overpowered the natural flavor of the meat. The tempura was also very good, but I would have enjoyed having a traditional dipping sauce in addition to the matcha salt. A small dessert or seasonal fruit at the end would also have been a nice finishing touch. The staff were friendly, polite, and attentive throughout the meal. Overall, I really appreciated the seasonal ingredients, beautiful presentation, and variety of dishes. With a few small improvements, I think the experience could be even better, especially for international guests.

The first thing that stood out to me was how beautifully the food was presented. My favorite dish was the fried Daisen chicken and fresh yuba, which I really enjoyed. Overall, I found the flavors to be on the stronger side. The tempura was wonderfully light and crispy, while the sashimi tasted very fresh. The wagyu was also excellent - very tender, and the sauce paired with it really well. Even the wasabi had a pleasant sweetness to it, which I really liked. The only slight disappointment was the nyumen at the end of the meal, as the noodles felt a little too soft and overcooked, although the broth itself was delicious. I was also surprised by the combination of dishes served as the appetizer. Considering the season, I had expected something like Murasaki Zukin edamame, which I think would also be approachable for international guests, or perhaps a small grilled fish. But I was pleasantly surprised by the lotus root and bacon stir-fried with ume and shiso, it was actually one of the most memorable dishes of the meal. The staff were very friendly and approachable, and they helped make the whole experience fun and enjoyable. Although some of the dishes were a little strongly seasoned for my personal taste, the food was generally very delicious, the portions were generous, and I left feeling very satisfied.

The food was beautifully presented and carefully prepared. My favorite dish was the wagyu, which was incredibly tender and paired perfectly with the sauce. The flavors were well balanced, with plenty of umami without feeling too heavy. I also enjoyed the variety of textures, especially the crispy tempura and crunchy lotus root. The matcha salt served with the tempura was unexpected but worked beautifully and felt distinctly Kyoto. I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the lotus root with ume seasoning, as it gave the dish a refreshing flavor. The staff were friendly and warm, making the experience very welcoming. Because of the seating layout, I think the restaurant is especially suited to solo diners or couples. Overall, I really enjoyed the balance of flavors and textures and the thoughtful way familiar Japanese ingredients were prepared.

The restaurant itself features beautiful Japanese-style design, creating an authentic Japanese dining experience. The food was amazing! I actually don’t usually like duck, but I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. I was also impressed that they served matcha salt as a dipping sauce for the tempura—it was my first time trying it, and it was such a unique experience. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful, with leaves and seasonal details that really captured the feeling of autumn. Most importantly, the staff were incredibly kind, friendly, and accommodating. They could also communicate well in English, which made the experience even more comfortable and enjoyable.

From the moment the food arrived, I was impressed by the beautiful presentation. The first course was decorated with autumn leaves, which added a lovely seasonal touch. There was a wonderful variety of dishes, including Kyoto-style obanzai, sashimi, tempura, temari sushi, duck loin, and fresh yuba. The flavors were delicate and well balanced. I especially enjoyed the refreshing combination of plum and shiso with lotus root. The Wagyu sirloin steak was my favorite and the most memorable dish. It was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. I also enjoyed the variety of textures throughout the meal, from crispy tempura to soft yuba. The restaurant has a cozy, traditional atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. I especially appreciated how they interacted with everyone and created a relaxed experience. I would recommend this restaurant to international visitors who want to experience a variety of Japanese dishes, especially groups of friends. The beautiful presentation and attention to detail made the whole meal memorable.

This was such a nice place to enjoy omakase. I was impressed by how carefully everything was served, especially the autumn leaves decorating the first course, which added a beautiful seasonal touch. The Kyoto-style home cooking (obanzai) was my favorite part of the meal. I loved trying several small dishes at once, each with its own flavor and character. The flavors were gentle, balanced, and comforting. I also enjoyed the variety throughout the meal, including sashimi, tempura, yuba, chicken, sushi, and Wagyu. The different textures and flavors made every course interesting. I think this would be a great experience for international visitors who want to discover traditional Japanese food. The restaurant has a cozy, traditional Japanese atmosphere, and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. I think it would be a lovely choice for dinner with friends or a relaxed date. The combination of traditional Kyoto-style food, the charming setting, and the attention to detail made this a memorable dining experience.

I really enjoyed being able to try many different Japanese home-style dishes and seasonal flavors in small portions. The flavors were well balanced, and there was also a nice variety of textures, from tender bacon to light and crispy tempura. My favorite dish was the bacon seasoned with ume (Japanese plum). The bacon was juicy and savory, while the ume added a refreshing acidity. The combination of ume and shiso was unique and especially memorable. These flavors may be unfamiliar to some international visitors, but I would definitely recommend trying them as part of the Japanese dining experience. The presentation had a warm, seasonal feeling, and the restaurant itself has a relaxed, slightly retro Kyoto atmosphere. Tucked away in a small alley in Gion, it feels like a hidden gem. The staff were also warm and welcoming. I think this restaurant is especially nice for couples or small groups who want to enjoy a variety of Japanese dishes in a relaxed setting. There was plenty of food, and I left feeling very satisfied. A small dessert at the end would have made the experience even better!

Yakiniku no GANSAN was a great restaurant and the meat was fantastic. We had the recommended Matsusaka platter and it was worth it. Although we preferred not to have wagyu in a Yakiniku restaurant, someone who we suspected was either the head chef or butcher came to explain how to cook each cut. The platter is made for 3-4 people bur all 4 of us was comfortably full. It was our first time eating at a Yakiniku restaurant with wagyu and was at first stressful, but after the first 2 cuts we became experts. The Chateaubriand cut was our favorite and if you only had one, that’s the one I recommend. Service was fantastic but there wasn’t a lot of interaction as we cooked our own meals.

It was clear the chef was totally used to running the whole place by himself. I loved how the seasonality showed in everything from the plates to his fun explanations of the food. With a quiet vibe and a lovely view outside, it was just a great place to sit back and enjoy good conversation with the chef and my companion. We chose the Seasonal Kaiseki Course, and the chef's culinary techniques were truly impressive. A standout for us was the hot dishes course—the crispy deep-fried sweetfish (Ayu) was cooked so perfectly that you could eat it whole, and the Yamashina eggplant dengaku with rich sweet miso was pure comfort. The attention to detail was everywhere. The sashimi featured flounder wrapped with edible chrysanthemum petals (Hirame Kikkamaki), which was as gorgeous as it was delicious. For the vinegared dish, the sweet horsehair crab served with refreshing Tosa vinegar, raw water eggplant, and cucumber provided a wonderful contrast in textures. The meal finished with an aromatic sea bream cooked rice, red miso soup, and a lovely dessert of Shine Muscat, Yokan, and Matcha. Experiencing such authentic Kyoto seasonality and refined cooking techniques made this special evening truly unforgettable. Highly recommended!

Such a great location for a date night in Kyoto. The atmosphere was quiet and cozy, and the chef was super friendly. They’re also very English-friendly, so we had no trouble at all. We got to enjoy some amazing Kyoto cuisine in such a relaxed setting. We had the seasonal Kaiseki course (¥22,000), and every single dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. From the refreshing starter of NAGAIMO noodles with sea cucumber gut to the exquisite appetizers presented on bamboo, you can really taste the freshness of seasonal Japanese ingredients. The highlight for us was the pike conger (Hamo) dishes—both the clear soup with delicate broth and the green-onion wrapped Hamo were exceptional. The sashimi featured medium fatty tuna and Sawara, perfectly fresh and buttery. We were also super impressed by the horsehair crab with Tosa vinegar and the savory sea bream cooked rice to finish the meal. The Shine Muscat and matcha dessert rounded off a truly memorable dining experience. Highly recommended if you want to experience authentic, high-end Kaiseki in Kyoto!

How can I reserve restaurants in Kyoto?

Not all Kyoto restaurants require reservations, but it's often essential.
