This was a very fun experience! Make sure you eat breakfast before though. The barista was able to answer all of my pressing matcha questions, and I was surprised by the little snack at the end to top things off. Overall, I would highly recommend this experience if you are curious about matcha and want to spend time with a top tier Matcha Master!

If you're even slightly curious about matcha, this is a fun and enriching experience. The matcha barista and expert is of course very skilled at what he does. In addition, he was also willing to entertain our questions and hear about our preferences and thoughts on the best ways to showcase the depth and richness of high-quality matcha. Just don't expect that your at-home matcha lattes will instantly turn out as good as his!

I joined this workshop at the Ikegami Baien Plum Garden in Tokyo’s Ota ward. Sayaka-san, who offers sweet-making workshops in Minami-Magome, greeted us at the garden entrance and guided us to a traditional house next to a koi pond, sharing fascinating details about the garden. We toured the wooden house with its different tearooms before settling in one for the class. Each of us had a personalized name card with kanji characters for our foreign names, a thoughtful touch. Before starting, Sayaka led us through a short meditation to help us focus. The class was conducted in English, and we received a color printout with each step to make cherry blossom-shaped wagashi. At the end, we sampled the sweets with matcha tea, which we prepared ourselves. We whipped the tea powder to the right foam level and poured it into beautiful tea cups. While sipping the tea and enjoying the sweets, we admired the autumn garden and listened to the sounds of water in the pond as the sun set. She was the sweetest teacher, explaining everything in detail in English on top of having prepared a color printout with all the necessary steps to make our sweets. She offered to take our photos and on top of the workshop, guided us through the garden pointing out the outstanding landscape and trees. A wonderful experience!

Discover the World of Matcha Workshops

Embarking on a journey into the world of matcha can be an incredibly enriching experience, especially when you engage in specialized workshops. These food experiences are designed to immerse you in the rich flavors, cultural significance, and meticulous preparation of matcha—a traditional Japanese green tea that is revered for its vibrant color and distinctive taste. Whether you are a tea enthusiast or a curious beginner, matcha workshops provide a direct window into understanding the intricacies of this celebrated beverage.

What to Expect in Matcha Workshops

Matcha workshops typically begin by exploring the origins and history of matcha, where you'll learn about its centuries-old significance in Japanese culture. The sessions often include a step-by-step demonstration of how to prepare matcha using traditional tools such as the chasen (bamboo whisk) and chawan (tea bowl). Participants are guided on how to achieve the perfect frothy consistency and balance of flavors, which is the hallmark of a well-prepared matcha.

In addition to the preparation techniques, workshops also delve into various grades and types of matcha. You'll have the opportunity to taste different varieties and understand how subtle changes in processing can impact the flavor profile. Many workshops incorporate the element of food pairings, teaching you how matcha can complement or contrast with different flavors and dishes.

Engage in a Cultural and Sensory Experience

Beyond the technical skills, matcha workshops offer a holistic cultural experience. By participating, you gain an appreciation for the ceremonial aspects of tea making that have been passed down through generations. The environment often emphasizes mindfulness, encouraging attendees to be present and savor each moment—from the aroma of the freshly whisked matcha to the meditative process of its preparation.

Workshops are conducted by knowledgeable instructors who share personal insights and tips, fostering an engaging and interactive learning atmosphere. As you practice whisking your own bowl of matcha, you'll not only acquire new skills but also create your own unique sensory memories—heightening your understanding of why matcha is so beloved worldwide.
