Description
Good to Know
Somewhere between nostalgic and quietly luxurious, Azabu Kougaiken first opened its doors in Hiroo, Tokyo, in 2015, offering a style of Japanese cuisine loved by children and adults alike — the kind of yoshoku restaurant three generations can enjoy together. That popularity carried the name to Nakameguro, Ikebukuro, and Kudanshita. In Ikebukuro, the restaurant sits on the eighth floor of the Yodobashi Holdings building, directly connected to the station's east exit, within a floor of restaurants known as Dining Park. What the original restaurant has held onto since the beginning is a simple idea: use nothing more than necessary, and let the true flavor of the ingredients carry the dish. That same approach continues here in Ikebukuro.
The omakase course offers a choice of two mains: the Kougaiken Yoshoku Plate, built around the restaurant's signature demi-glace hamburger steak, or a lighter seafood option — a gently poached fillet of sea bream finished in a beurre blanc sauce. The hamburger steak, made from a blend of domestic beef and pork and simmered slowly in demi-glace, is rich enough that guests often find themselves wondering exactly what went into it, and how long it took to get there. The moment the plate arrives, a curl of steam rises together with the warm aroma of butter. To close the meal, a housemade "Ultimate Basque Cheesecake" is served — a small, quiet pleasure meant to bring a little happiness to even the busiest of days.
Families, old friends, and solo diners alike are equally welcome here — a relaxed place in Japan to stop by between shopping and a show in Ikebukuro.
