Experience Details

Step into a local kitchen in Yanaka and turn a simple rice ball into something personal and creative.

In this hands-on class, you will learn how to shape and design your own onigiri, then build a bento box that reflects your taste and style.

Onigiri are a familiar part of everyday life in Japan, found in shops and convenience stores across the country.

In this experience, you will go beyond store-bought options and learn how to make them yourself. With guidance from your host, you will shape rice by hand and explore a range of forms, from classic styles to more playful designs.

You can customize your onigiri with a variety of fillings, toppings, pickles, and furikake. This step allows you to create flavors that suit your preference while learning how small details can change both taste and appearance.

Once your onigiri are ready, you will begin assembling your bento box.

Your creations will be paired with a selection of seasonal side dishes sourced from local shops in Yanaka. These may include karaage, croquettes, or Japanese omelet, offering a glimpse of everyday home-style food in the neighborhood.

You will then arrange your onigiri and side dishes with attention to balance and presentation. This is a chance to explore how color, spacing, and composition come together in Japanese bento culture.

Before eating, you will have time to take photos of your finished bento. You will then enjoy your meal alongside a bowl of miso soup in a relaxed setting.

As you eat, you can chat with your host, learn more about local food culture, and get recommendations for places to explore in Yanaka.

This experience offers a simple and enjoyable way to connect with everyday Japanese cooking through hands-on creativity.
