Experience Details

Begin your day the Japanese way with a home-cooked breakfast made from seasonal ingredients and time-honored recipes.

In this intimate morning cooking class in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward, you'll step into a welcoming home kitchen and discover how a traditional Japanese breakfast balances nutrition and flavor.

As rice gently cooks in a traditional earthenware pot, your host will introduce the dishes that have nourished generations of Japanese families. You'll learn how simple ingredients can be transformed into a satisfying and well-balanced meal as you work with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Prepare a Japanese omelet using a traditional rectangular egg pan or a plant-based alternative, then make classic breakfast dishes like simmered hijiki seaweed and ohitashi, seasonal greens seasoned with dashi and soy sauce.

You'll also make miso soup with seasonal vegetables, gaining insight into the foundations of Japanese home cooking through the preparation of authentic soup stock.

Additional breakfast staples may include chilled hiyayakko tofu, homemade pickles made using traditional household methods, and natto, Japan's famous fermented soybeans. For adventurous eaters, natto offers the chance to experience one of Japan's most iconic breakfast foods.

This experience was inspired by a returning guest who struggled to find vegan and gluten-free breakfast options while traveling in Japan.

The class reflects the idea that Japanese breakfasts can be both nourishing and adaptable, making it easier for guests with different dietary preferences to enjoy authentic home cooking.

Throughout the experience, your host will explain ingredients, techniques, and cultural context, and guide you in English.

After cooking, everyone will gather around the table to enjoy the breakfast they have prepared together, share conversation, and have a relaxed start to the day before heading out to explore Tokyo.
