AIN SOPH. is a very popular name when it comes to plant-based, vegan food in Japan. And its newest branch in Kyoto located just right off the Shinkyogoku Shopping Arcade, has succeeded in maintaining that reputation. The restaurant has a warm and cozy space, presenting a homey atmosphere, living up to its concept, “a place to return to your true self.” All the food here are magical spin-offs from their Western non-vegan versions. You can have a hearty burger with “chicken” made from soy and seitan with crispy fried potatoes, or opt for a dish of flavorful mushroom and tomato Hayashi rice. Save some space for dessert, because the restaurant is on the up-and-up when it comes to sweet delights. The regulars’ favorite, vegan pancakes made with vegan cheese, has a similar texture to English muffins but is fluffier. Other desserts, including the frothy creme brûlée, or the decadent chocolate gateau, are also highly praised.
