Gion Hitsuji is a cozy restaurant with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The food was beautifully presented with seasonal decorations, and it was clear that a lot of attention was paid to the ingredients and presentation.
My favorite dishes were the lotus root with bacon, plum and shiso, and the daikon radish and konnyaku with spicy cod roe butter. I was also pleasantly surprised by the yuba, which had a lovely creamy texture. The steak was delicious and another highlight of the meal, although I felt the sauce slightly overpowered the natural flavor of the meat.
The tempura was also very good, but I would have enjoyed having a traditional dipping sauce in addition to the matcha salt. A small dessert or seasonal fruit at the end would also have been a nice finishing touch.
The staff were friendly, polite, and attentive throughout the meal. Overall, I really appreciated the seasonal ingredients, beautiful presentation, and variety of dishes. With a few small improvements, I think the experience could be even better, especially for international guests.

The first thing that stood out to me was how beautifully the food was presented. My favorite dish was the fried Daisen chicken and fresh yuba, which I really enjoyed.
Overall, I found the flavors to be on the stronger side. The tempura was wonderfully light and crispy, while the sashimi tasted very fresh. The wagyu was also excellent - very tender, and the sauce paired with it really well. Even the wasabi had a pleasant sweetness to it, which I really liked. The only slight disappointment was the nyumen at the end of the meal, as the noodles felt a little too soft and overcooked, although the broth itself was delicious. I was also surprised by the combination of dishes served as the appetizer. Considering the season, I had expected something like Murasaki Zukin edamame, which I think would also be approachable for international guests, or perhaps a small grilled fish. But I was pleasantly surprised by the lotus root and bacon stir-fried with ume and shiso, it was actually one of the most memorable dishes of the meal.
The staff were very friendly and approachable, and they helped make the whole experience fun and enjoyable. Although some of the dishes were a little strongly seasoned for my personal taste, the food was generally very delicious, the portions were generous, and I left feeling very satisfied.

The food was beautifully presented and carefully prepared. My favorite dish was the wagyu, which was incredibly tender and paired perfectly with the sauce. The flavors were well balanced, with plenty of umami without feeling too heavy.
I also enjoyed the variety of textures, especially the crispy tempura and crunchy lotus root. The matcha salt served with the tempura was unexpected but worked beautifully and felt distinctly Kyoto. I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the lotus root with ume seasoning, as it gave the dish a refreshing flavor.
The staff were friendly and warm, making the experience very welcoming. Because of the seating layout, I think the restaurant is especially suited to solo diners or couples.
Overall, I really enjoyed the balance of flavors and textures and the thoughtful way familiar Japanese ingredients were prepared.

The restaurant itself features beautiful Japanese-style design, creating an authentic Japanese dining experience. The food was amazing! I actually don’t usually like duck, but I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was.
I was also impressed that they served matcha salt as a dipping sauce for the tempura—it was my first time trying it, and it was such a unique experience. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful, with leaves and seasonal details that really captured the feeling of autumn.
Most importantly, the staff were incredibly kind, friendly, and accommodating. They could also communicate well in English, which made the experience even more comfortable and enjoyable.

From the moment the food arrived, I was impressed by the beautiful presentation. The first course was decorated with autumn leaves, which added a lovely seasonal touch.
There was a wonderful variety of dishes, including Kyoto-style obanzai, sashimi, tempura, temari sushi, duck loin, and fresh yuba. The flavors were delicate and well balanced. I especially enjoyed the refreshing combination of plum and shiso with lotus root.
The Wagyu sirloin steak was my favorite and the most memorable dish. It was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. I also enjoyed the variety of textures throughout the meal, from crispy tempura to soft yuba.
The restaurant has a cozy, traditional atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. I especially appreciated how they interacted with everyone and created a relaxed experience.
I would recommend this restaurant to international visitors who want to experience a variety of Japanese dishes, especially groups of friends. The beautiful presentation and attention to detail made the whole meal memorable.

This was such a nice place to enjoy omakase. I was impressed by how carefully everything was served, especially the autumn leaves decorating the first course, which added a beautiful seasonal touch.
The Kyoto-style home cooking (obanzai) was my favorite part of the meal. I loved trying several small dishes at once, each with its own flavor and character. The flavors were gentle, balanced, and comforting.
I also enjoyed the variety throughout the meal, including sashimi, tempura, yuba, chicken, sushi, and Wagyu. The different textures and flavors made every course interesting. I think this would be a great experience for international visitors who want to discover traditional Japanese food.
The restaurant has a cozy, traditional Japanese atmosphere, and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. I think it would be a lovely choice for dinner with friends or a relaxed date.
The combination of traditional Kyoto-style food, the charming setting, and the attention to detail made this a memorable dining experience.

I really enjoyed being able to try many different Japanese home-style dishes and seasonal flavors in small portions. The flavors were well balanced, and there was also a nice variety of textures, from tender bacon to light and crispy tempura.
My favorite dish was the bacon seasoned with ume (Japanese plum). The bacon was juicy and savory, while the ume added a refreshing acidity. The combination of ume and shiso was unique and especially memorable. These flavors may be unfamiliar to some international visitors, but I would definitely recommend trying them as part of the Japanese dining experience.
The presentation had a warm, seasonal feeling, and the restaurant itself has a relaxed, slightly retro Kyoto atmosphere. Tucked away in a small alley in Gion, it feels like a hidden gem. The staff were also warm and welcoming.
I think this restaurant is especially nice for couples or small groups who want to enjoy a variety of Japanese dishes in a relaxed setting. There was plenty of food, and I left feeling very satisfied. A small dessert at the end would have made the experience even better!

An Unforgettable Sushi Experience in Tokyo!
I visited Okuakasaka Sushi Tanji with two friends, and it was easily one of our favorite dining experiences in Japan. The minimalist interior creates a peaceful and elegant atmosphere from the moment you walk in.
Every dish felt refined and carefully prepared. Each piece of sushi had a wonderful balance of umami, sweetness, and saltiness. The aged fish was buttery and tender, pairing beautifully with the warm, seasoned sushi rice. The aged tuna nigiri was a highlight, as was the straw-grilled smoked fish with its wonderful aroma. The beautiful Japanese ceramics also made every course a pleasure to look at.
The chefs and staff were warm and welcoming and spoke excellent English, making the experience very comfortable for international guests. The intimate hinoki cypress counter also added to the special atmosphere.
One of the best surprises came at the end. We were led into a hidden traditional tatami tea room, where the chef prepared fresh matcha served with a seasonal wagashi sweet. It was a peaceful and memorable way to finish the evening.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a special omakase experience in Tokyo!

The food at Sushi Tanji was the main highlight of the experience. Each piece of sushi felt carefully prepared, with a good balance between the softness of the fish and the texture of the rice. Some pieces were richer and fattier, while others were lighter and cleaner, so the omakase never felt repetitive. The flavours were fresh, delicate and well balanced rather than overly salty or heavy.
What surprised me most was the dessert at the end. The matcha was prepared in front of me in a small traditional room, which made it feel much more special. It was slightly bitter and earthy, and it paired perfectly with the muscat daifuku. The daifuku was soft and chewy, while the muscat inside was extremely juicy and sweet. Honestly, the matcha and muscat daifuku were probably my favourite part of the whole meal. The sushi was excellent, but that final combination was what I remembered most after leaving.

such a special and memorable experience! 🍣🍵✨
The sushi was amazing, and I loved how the chefs explained where each fish came from. I could ask questions and even learn how to pronounce some of the fish names in Japanese, so I actually learned a lot during the meal. I normally don’t like squid or scallop, but this was the first sushi restaurant where I genuinely enjoyed the scallop!
But the absolute highlight was the tea ceremony. 🍵 I had never experienced matcha like this before. I always thought matcha prepared with water was supposed to be very bitter, but this was incredibly smooth, rich and delicious. We were also served a traditional Japanese sweet alongside it, which was the perfect way to finish the experience.
I was also completely surprised by the hidden tea room! The whole concept is so unique and intimate, and I think it would be perfect for a birthday, anniversary, date, or any special occasion.
If you’re travelling all the way to Japan, I really believe you should treat yourself to experiences like this. It’s so much more than just dinner it’s food, Japanese culture, hospitality and craftsmanship all in one unforgettable experience.
The chefs were also incredibly polite and welcoming… and very handsome men, I have to say.
