Our host, Kaori, was very nice and friendly. She patiently explained the steps for all the participants when it was their turn and answered any questions we had. It was very cool that apart from the actual tea ceremony experience, she also introduced us to some of the history behind tea ceremonies. My partner and I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone looking to experience a tea ceremony in a traditional building in Kyoto.

We loved the tea ceremony with Yurie, and how she wove the histories of Hiroshima and tea together. The confectionary store is beautiful. The ceremony was so tranquil and peaceful. Definitely recommend!!

We had a fantastic experience with Chihiro and her husband. Chihiro is a true tea master, and we learned so much about the Chado ceremony and the making of matcha. They were both so kind and helpful as well. This was one of the highlights of our whole trip to Japan. The experience was very private and personalized, so we got to truly enjoy the serenity of a real Japanese tea ceremony. The tea itself and the accompanying treats were delicious. By far the best matcha I've ever had. I highly recommend this experience!

Tea Ceremony in Japan

Dating back to the 8th century, tea was originally introduced to Japan from China. The tea ceremony in Japan is considered to be one of the three main traditional Japanese art forms, sitting proudly alongside calligraphy and ikebana flower arranging. The ritualistic side of the Japanese tea ceremony and the preparation of matcha green tea was introduced by Zen Buddhists in Kyoto. Today, the historical and ceremonial process of preparing matcha is known as "chado" or "the way of tea," and can be enjoyed at tea rooms throughout Japan from Tokyo to Osaka and beyond. Once a beverage enjoyed solely by bureaucrats and elite samurai, Japanese green tea and traditional practices of the Japanese tea ceremony in Japan is now an experience enjoyed by anyone. Typically held in a beautiful Japanese tea room, you can enjoy matcha with traditional wagashi sweets during a Japan tea ceremony where you can even learn how to make matcha yourself with guidance from a master. Relax and enjoy the refinement and tranquility of this unique cultural experience that is deeply rooted in Japan’s history.
