Experience Details

The Tokyo National Museum houses many of Japan’s treasures, including ancient scrolls, delicate ceramics, and historic buildings of great cultural significance. One such building is Okyokan, with a history spanning over 280 years. Originally a temple study room, it was later moved to Tokyo and donated to the museum in the 20th century. Carefully preserved, Okyokan features reproductions of fusuma paintings by master Maruyama Okyo, as well as a traditional tearoom that sets the scene for an unforgettable dining experience.

Begin your visit by entering the museum and making your way to the Tohaku Chakan tearoom inside Okyokan, nestled within the museum gardens. Here, you’ll enjoy a seasonal dining course (Edo Course) highlighting fresh Japanese ingredients. Prepared by a chef with experience in five-star hotels, your meal is beautifully presented in traditional oju multi-tiered boxes, accompanied by hot or cold tea. Additional drinks are available for purchase.

After your meal, take part in a hands-on matcha-making session. Guided by an expert, you’ll learn to whisk tea and enjoy your freshly made matcha alongside traditional Japanese sweets. While in Okyokan, explore its pristine interiors and admire the reproductions of fusuma paintings by Maruyama Okyo, a master of the 20th century.

Finally, take the opportunity to explore the Tokyo National Museum itself, home to thousands of historical artifacts, including items designated as culturally important and national treasures. This experience offers a rare chance to connect with Japan’s art, history, and culinary traditions all in one remarkable visit.
