Experience Details
The Tokyo National Museum guards many of Japan's treasures, including ancient scroll paintings, delicate ceramics and even entire buildings of great historical significance.
One such building is Okyokan, spanning over 280 years of history. Originally a temple study room, it was later transported to Tokyo and eventually donated to the Tokyo National Museum in the 20th century. Okyokan has been carefully preserved, complete with reproductions of fusuma paintings by master Maruyama Okyo. Its traditional tearoom provides the perfect setting for this unforgettable dining experience where you can connect with quintessential Japanese traditions.
Experience Flow:
- Enter the Tokyo National Museum, and make your way to the Tohaku Chakan tearoom inside the Okyokan building, located in the museum gardens. (Note that the admission fee to the museum is not included.)
- Enjoy a seasonal dining course highlighting Japanese ingredients (Edo Course). Prepared by a seasoned chef with professional experience in 5-star hotels, your meal will be impeccably presented in oju multi-tiered food boxes typically reserved to use on special occasions. Hot or cold tea is included in the meal, and other drinks are available for purchase onsite for an additional fee.
- Following your meal, you'll have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on matcha-making experience. Guided by an expert, you'll learn a casual way of whisking tea and savor your freshly made matcha with traditional Japanese sweets.
- Tour the pristine interiors of Okyokan and admire the reproduction of fusuma paintings from 20th-century master Maruyama Okyo.
- After the experience, explore the Tokyo National Museum. Home to thousands of historical artifacts, including items designated as culturally important and national treasures, this museum is a great place to experience the rich cultural heritage of Japan right at the heart of Tokyo.
